It bugs me /way/ more than it should that whoever wrote this Canadian Press article doesn’t know that “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” was /not/ a track in the Backstreet Boys’ Millenium album. www.thestar.com/news/canada/...
The concerts will draw on the group's 1999 album "Millennium," which included hits such as "I Want It That Way" and "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)."

Sad to learn that Carl Berger passed away last week. He taught half of the Canadian history survey that I took at the University of Toronto. His book The Sense of Power played a major role in shaping my understanding of Canada's relationship to imperialism in the late-19th and early-20th centuries.

*Joe Clark entered the chat. And also faced a PQ government, and had things gone René Lévesque's way, would have been the PM to face the 1980 referendum.

Canadian Thanksgiving was mentioned in an episode of How I Met Your Mother by Robin as the "real Thanksgiving," but I know that's not what you have in mind.

I'm planning to attend the CHA next year - my Clark biography comes out in the spring, and I want to be there to sign copies. 😉 I'm on the fence about presenting a paper, but if anyone's looking for a third for a panel about Canada between 1956 & 2004 - I can probably find some way to connect!

Definitely an issue here. And when salary increases are done as percentages (as one component is in our collective agreement) those at the top end keep getting the largest increases.

Woohoo! I could retire next year at 50 if it were 20 years. Seriously though, I think this is a good potential workaround, and with the possibility of mutually agreed-upon but not automatic extensions.

Indeed. I knew from the get-go that a two-volume biography wasn't going to be marketable, but there's more than enough content to warrant that approach. His period as PM only accounts for 2 chapters out of 21. A lot of the more interesting stuff relates to his time in other roles.

I’ve set it out as six major sections corresponding to different phases of his political career - and recommend folks who find the full length daunting (understandably) focus on the time periods of more interest to them.

Yep. Although the text of the narrative ends at p. 475 (and some of the photo pages are in that count). He was active in federal politics in various capacities for almost half a century. It’s effectively a two volume biography in one set of covers. And that’s after I made major cuts.

An unholy combination of Uniweb and Sharepoint: CV data entered into Uniweb, then exported to Word. All supporting files uploaded to Sharepoint. Then faculty have to make shareable links on the Word document to the Sharepoint files. Then the Word document is resaved as PDF and uploaded to Sharepoint

I am firmly convinced that the only reason we were forced to use the train-wreck of a system the university bought for T&P & CV management (this year is our first biennial review of all faculty since 2018) is that they sunk so much money into it. It's an absolute disaster and the faculty loathe it.

I feel like I have now joined the club, as I’ve received my first spambot book club invitations this week. My first tip-off was that they are for an edited collection that came out in 2018… hardly the stuff of book club glory.

It didn’t end as Joe Clark and the federal PCs hoped. 9/11 changed the focus of federal politics away from Liberal ethics, the CA ditched Day, Harper became leader, most of the DRC rejoined the CA, and then the merger happened. But in an alternate timeline, who knows how that might have played out.

Watching the drama in the BC Conservative Party I am thinking of the parallels from 25 yrs ago when the “Rebel Alliance” broke off from Stockwell Day’s leadership of the Cdn Alliance, and then caucused & sat alongside the federal Progressive Conservatives as the Democratic Reform Caucus.

I'm not sure what @stillots1.bsky.social will think about the fact that I'm thinking of her as I construct my book index entries related to taxation - but it's intended as a form of praise for how she and others (looking at you Elsbeth and Jeff) have built out the field of Canadian taxation history.

As I watch all these Canadian universities roll out their announcements about the “Eddie Goldenberg” (ugh - partisan branding) research chairs, I can only think of how much federal and university money that /could/ have gone to brand new, junior, or current faculty already in Canada it represents.

I suspect this varies by discipline, but our department's track record for the past decade has mostly been over-35 hires, and those under it have only been barely so. A reflection of a very competitive job market in the humanities.

So, given that the orange one has announced a new Canada-US trade deal is imminent, am I correct, in 2026-speak, in thinking it is about as close as a deal between the US and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz. Just trying to ensure my recalibration is accurate.
