Another "I'm not dead post" while slugging away on Book 7. Here're revisions made to my recent Caudipteryx #paleoart piece after revisiting the distribution of melanised feathers in referred specimens. I also closed the split tail, following feedback from @albertonykus.bsky.social - thanks, Albert!
A black and white, turkey-like dinosaur stands on an icy lake in Cretaceous China. It braces against the slow splay of its legs. As its body incrementally lowers, inching closer to the ice, it hears a voice. The ghosts of the icy forest, perhaps? The spirits of its ancestors? Perhaps nothing else can hear it, but it's getting louder, sharper. Now it can make out a sequence of sounds. They are... words? The same phrase, repeated over and over? First a whisper, then a chant. Yes, it's very clear now. Louder again - a roar! A chorus! They cry:

"GET BACK TO WORK, MARK, YOU HAVE ONE WEEK LEFT TO FINISH YOUR BOOK. THIS IS NOT A PRODUCTIVE USE OF YOUR TIME."

Man, even my alt-text won't give me a break.

a new triassic silesaurid has been identified in brazil's santa maria formation, described by müller in an #openaccess paper 📃 known from a femur, this unnamed taxon is noted for its large size anatomypubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/... (art by @mfgadelha.bsky.social)
first image: the new silesaurid is depicted in a semi-arid environment feeding on ferns, followed by two smaller coeval silesaurids. both animals are depicted with sparse feathers over most of their bodies but scaly legs and tails, and the larger silesaurid has a distinctive purple dewlap
second image: another life reconstruction, this time highlighting the difference in femoral proportions between the new silesaurid and its smaller relative

Foggy morning in Late Pleistocene Patagonia. #Art #SciArt #artbyjulio
A scene depicting the Patagonian scrubland in the early morning, dotted with araucarias and framed by foggy mountains in the background. A pair of Macrauchenia, four guanacos and a patagonian mara are seen among the grass. A Megatherium walks by further away and a crested caracara flies over the scene.

Felt inspired to do a piece inspired by paleoart aesthetics that were common when I was growing up. This is mostly based on a particular one by Mark Hallet, though I think I channeled some other influences as well. #SciArt #paleoart #artbyjulio
A small group of diplodocid sauropods walks through an expanse of dry ground, with scattered rocks and puddles. In the background lies a forest covered in mist, and impressive cloud formations in the sky. A few rhamphorhynchid pterosaurs fly by, and a small ornithopod moves away from a puddle as the sauropods approach.

Lightcatcher (Oxalaia quilombensis) #paleoart #SciArt #artbyjulio
An Oxalaia quilombensis (very close Spinosaurus relative from Brazil) crosses a tidal flat under a dark, cloudy sky. The dinosaur has its tail resting or dragging across the muddy ground, powerful arms, long neck and head and a rectangular-shaped sail on its back giving it a kaiju-like appearance. To its right there's a discarded turtle shell, and to its right, a pile of driftwood. Soft light is hitting its sail and part of its neck making them look brighter and more vivid than the somber looking environment.

You won't be surprised to learn that King Tyrant has some comments on azhdarchids vs. T. rex, including citations of multiple papers on birds stealing food from or harassing much larger, relatively formidable mammalian and avian opponents. There's also some updated size comparisons and art.

Here the result of the St. Bathans fauna stream! This one took us into the early Miocene of New Zealand, the Moa's ark, as some call it. After many formation streams with very few birds this one has probably way too many! #paleostream #paleoart #sciart

Going through an art block since the end of last year but managed to do something involving three things I aesthetically enjoy ✔️snowy grasslands ✔️northern lights ✔️cheetah-adjacent cats Miracinonyx watching a herd of reindeer somewhere in nothern USA, Late Pleistocene #paleoart #SciArt #artbyjulio
A cheetah-like Miracinonyx stands on top of a small boulder in a snowy prairie. In the background, a herd of reindeer move amidst a cloud of dust. Beyond them there's mountains on the horizon, and greenish northern lights on a dark blue sky with faint stars.

I've illustrated a new species of fossil cockroach, which shows the earliest evidence of aposematic colouration in a cockroach: Meet Alderblattina simmsi! It hails from the Jurassic of Gloucestershire and was described by Swaby et al. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/... #FossilFriday
A cockroach walking across a surface of mosses. It is walking right to left and is in almost lateral view. Its headshield has two pale spots and its wings, which are folded over each other on its back, have two dark spots roughly over the centre of the body, and the tips of the wings are also dark.

Brazilian Fossil Hints at Older Origin for All Dinosaurs
The discovery may push back the emergence of the reptiles that once ruled the Earth, and clarify how dinosaurs like the Triceratops and Stegosaurus emerged.
