The best talk I believe I have seen this year: Hanna Pickard beautifully communicating philosophical considerations, to both preclinical and clinical neuroscientists of the Bordeaux Neurocampus, regarding paradigms of addiction and how these impact how we investigate and how we treat addiction.
Hanna Pickard beside slide titled "The Puzzle of Addiction"Hanna Pickard beside a slide featuring a photo of Keith Richards and his quote, "I never had a problem with drugs. I only had a problem with the police."

Gan dabht. The Tóibíns are out there and we shouldn't construct our messages worried about irritating their ilk. Recent safe driving ads are a good example of showing both the behaviour to avoid and the kind of behaviour to adopt, on a subject of equal importance re protecting others.

100% agree with all of this. A parallel consideration is whether this specific ad, as an audiovisual signal, effectively communicated the message it needed to communicate to the audience who needed to hear it. There are imo some lessons to be learned there, precisely because it's important.

The furore over this is ridiculous, but I will say that what the ad lacked, from a purely educational point of view, was an exemplification of what proper (or *sound*) grandparent behaviour would look like here: reading the situation and, for ex., rebuffing a parent trying to force the kid to hug.

This news is of course to be understood as accumulating on top of the PHP weaknesses identified and exploited by AI too (a story far from over). Perhaps slop will eat itself, but if so... it's going to devour so much else along with it. #refuseresist

Haven't seen For All Mankind but, fun watch that it is, it's not better than, or really even comparable to, Widow's Bay. But it is lots of fun. I'd give the show 7.5 out of 10, and Gary Oldman 11.

This was always behaviour I recognized as sound when my folks would try to oblige awkward heel-kicking me to hug or kiss on the cheek or whatever: those adults who'd say, "Leave him he's grand; he's no need to be giving hugs if he doesn't feel like it!" etc. Basic, simple: sound.

Paralleling the make-up of the Starlink network, every X user also constitutes a satellite Musk owns and uses to his ends, viz. to further his fascist vision of the future of humanity.

Asked non-rhetorically, this--the question of who wants to (primarily) consume generated-on-demand personally customized community-isolated art--is undoubtedly one of the most important sociological issues of our age.

It is AI. Something which Musk sells. But even the genAI not sold by Musk is sold by people who are plainly as evil-aligned as he, making the post (which didn't need an image to get its msg across anyway) self-defeating. genAI-powered protest will eat itself.

One literally *has* to wonder how the psychopaths (sensu stricto) who make military targeting software for the likes of Palantir weigh up the value of infant vs adult life, ie when it comes to questions of calculating "permissible" civilian kill margins. Cos looking at result of their use in Gaza..💀

Do you care more about human welfare than buildings? Are you looking at France & presuming there's nothing you can do to help? Faux! You can raise the subject of France's horrific record on police brutality every time someone mentions the protests: it should be a much better known source of shame:

Calling that "the joke" is imo giving Sacha Baron Cohen far too much credit. If you've had the unique displeasure of seeing the first film, it should leave you in no doubt that any deeper level of humour than the puerility and mocking was accidental.

1. Increase social welfare allowance to a humane level. 2. Decrease retail profit margins to a moral level. => Those collecting payments can now also be economy-stimulating customers. "Problem" solved! 🥳

The looting etc, is being manipulated (facilitated by and contributed to by riot police) under order by the ministry for interior though, that much is true, and that many on the left here are not accounting for it in their rhetoric. imo: keep bringing discourse back to police violence against kids

The French protests aren’t race based or about migration. This is a narrative being pushed by the global far right. It is literally about the French government’s austerity measures against schools and education. The fact the debate has been morphed to be about race shows how racist the UK press is
