News just in from the frontlines of users vs genAIs (which is what I'm talking about, not what is said in articles the vast majority of those billion users will never read):
Screenshot of user asking chatgpt "Can I use chatgpt to do science?"

The best talk I believe I have seen this year: Hanna Pickard beautifully communicating philosophical considerations, to both preclinical and clinical neuroscientists of the Bordeaux Neurocampus, regarding paradigms of addiction and how these impact how we investigate and how we treat addiction.

lol (or 'mdr') at the ironic bad faith grammar nazi-ing in the comments, naturally with a side-order of social prejudice of a different variety:

Wrote a letter for latest issue of the @neurobordeaux.bsky.social student magazine, Brainstorm. An opportunity to demonstrate how neuroscience & philosophy can work together, it touches on empirical method/Bacon, bias/my own research, intention, selfhood, habit change/Dewey, plus a wee genAI warning
Who do we brain researchers think we are?

Christopher Stevens is a postdoc at INCIA. He originates from Dublin, Ireland, but did his university studies in philosophy in Paris (Nanterre, Paris X and La Sorbonne, Paris IV) before coming to Bordeaux to study neuroscience. He has a PhD in neuroscience from the University of Bordeaux (2022) and a PhD in philosophy from Université Bordeaux-Montaigne (2026). Currently, he is a postdoc in Serge Ahmed’s Choice, Addiction and Neurodysfunctions team, working on the question of how to model addiction-like phenotypes in non-human animals.

As neuroscientists, we are accustomed to seeing and using phrases like “the neurobiologicalunderpinnings of [such and such a phenotype of interest].” We also know that the phenotypes whose
neural bases we investigate are rarely easy to isolate and define, representing a challenge that often
demands years of back and forth between research at the internal neurobiological and research at the
externally observable (behavioral or symptomatic) levels. Indeed, where the object of investigation is
not satisfactorily defined, it can be the neurobiological underpinnings of something quite distinct from
our stated target that we end up fluorescing, recording, or activating/inhibiting, constituting research
digressions which often delay progress in the fitting direction. Illustrative of the challenge is the winding
path of research that led to behavioral and neuronal differentiation of the “passive” immobility of
learned helplessness and the “active” mobility-inhibiting freezing of adaptive fear response (1.
At more abstract levels of brain function, this definitional challenge only becomes trickier. Little
surprise, then, it is here that certain questions essential to progress in neuroscience become
indistinguishable from questions philosophy has been reflecting on for millennia: What is belief? What is thought? What is wanting or desire? Do our behaviors result from free will or are they determined b…

Sounds to me very much like Rooney is in on what is a planned strategy to force the situation to its logical book-banning conclusion:
"In a statement provided to the Guardian, the bestselling author said: “‘In July 2025, the direct-action protest group Palestine Action was proscribed as a terrorist organisation in the UK. The following month, I wrote an opinion piece expressing my intention to go on supporting Palestine Action, which is not a proscribed or otherwise prohibited group here in the Republic of Ireland.

“As a result, the fulfilment of contracts to publish my work in the UK could now constitute a serious criminal offence. After a process of consultation and deliberation, and with my full agreement, my publisher Faber has therefore determined that it can no longer supply my work within the UK. I have made every effort to be honest with the public about my beliefs and intentions, and I am wholly prepared to accept the consequences.”

In a high court statement in support of the legal challenge to proscription, warning against its impact on freedom of expression, Rooney said her books could disappear from UK stores and the publication of new works in the UK could be prevented."

You have poorly worded your framing of this, and it's causing confusion among many regarding Faber's reasons for this decision (notably a decision reached with Sally). www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...
"Her UK and Ireland publisher, Faber said: “Current legislation in the UK has led to circumstances where Faber cannot pass on UK earnings to Sally Rooney for her work. To sell a writer’s work and not be able to pass on earnings is an unconscionable situation for a publisher.

“As such, and in full agreement with Sally, we have taken the decision that we can no longer supply her works in the UK in any format. We remain the proud publisher of her remarkable body of work, which we will continue to sell in other territories.”"

Important precision not clear in that framing:

When I was ~10 I idolized Hetfield, precisely because, on top of the music I was addicted to, his lyrics were instrumental in the beginnings of me freeing myself from a fundamentalist religious upbringing. But I got over that idolizing almost 30 yrs ago (see img) & this latest from him is no suprise
Extract from a text I wrote for a now defunct metal website 17 yrs ago:
"My first ever encounter of money in metal was seeing Lars Ulrich driving a Porsche in a clip filmed during the recording of the Black Album. At the time I was about fourteen years old and money to me was exactly that: what separated me and things, shiny black high-speed things. Well, money and a driving license. And while my initial impression on seeing the clip was admittedly, “holy shit that’s amazing, they’ve made money from playing the best music I know!”, it wasn’t long before I began to understand that the link I had had with these people no longer existed. I distinctly remember listening through to Master of Puppets at around sixteen and during Leper Messiah I thought to myself… make a contribution and you’ll get a better seat… so how much are tickets for the snake pit these days?"

In one of Jane Addams' many powerful articles ("If Men Were Seeking the Franchise") she imagines an alternate reality where society has always had a matriarchal form. Then, parodying men's then present arguments, she imagines what the women of such a society might say to deny men the vote. And it's👌
Extract from "If Men Were Seeking the Franchise" (1913). Reprinted in 'Jane Addams: Progressive Pioneer of Peace, Philosophy, Sociology, Social Work and Public Administration' (2017).

"First, could not the women say: “Our most valid objection to extending the franchise to you is that you are so fond of fighting you always have been since you were little boys. You’d very likely forget that the real object of the State is to nurture and protect life, and out of sheer vain glory you would be voting away huge sums of money for battleships, not one of which could last more than a few years, and yet each would cost ten million dollars; more money than all the buildings of Harvard University represent, although it is the richest educational institution in
America. Every time a gun is fired in a battleship it expends, or rather explodes, seventeen hundred dollars, as much as a college education costs many a country boy, and yet you would be firing off these guns as mere salutes, with no enemy within three thousand miles, simply because you so enjoy the sound of shooting.”"

"We believe great art comes from the individual, and if your work has been modified by AI, we will know, we will red flag it, and we will reject your submission.

Writing is hard; editing is hard. It’s meant to be hard. AI is quite simply cheating. It’s cheating the reading public, and it’s cheating the writer themselves. We hope all aspiring writers will come to recognize that the journey to completing a manuscript matters as much as where you end up. "This inquiry is intelligence." When Dewey wrote this passage, around 1920, he was already taking aim at shallow definitions of "intelligence" such as that advanced by Binet, the godfather of IQ tests. The IQ camp won because it suited shallow educational objectives. We live in the resulting world.
"A moral situation is one in which judgment and choice are required
antecedently to overt action. The practical meaning of the situation-
that is to say the action needed to satisfy it-is not self-evident. It
has to be searched for. There are conflicting desires and alternative
apparent goods. What is needed is to find the right course of action, the
right good. Hence, inquiry is exacted: observation of the detailed make-
up of the situation; analysis into its diverse factors; clarification of what
is obscure; discounting of the more insistent and vivid traits; tracing
the consequences of the various modes of action that suggest themselves;
regarding the decision reached as hypothetical and tentative until the
anticipated or supposed consequences which led to its adoption have
been squared with actual consequences. This inquiry is intelligence. Our
moral failures go back to some weakness of disposition, some absence
of sympathy, some onesided bias that makes us perform the judgment of the concrete case carelessly or perversely. Wide sympathy, keen
sensitiveness, persistence in the face of the disagreeable, balance of
interests enabling us to undertake the work of analysis and decision
intelligently are the distinctively moral traits-the virtues or moral ex-
cellencies." Reconstruction in Philosophy (1920)

Interesting to recall then that Fahrenheit 451 doesn't end with a return of writing but with a resistance who've unlocked/rediscovered cognitive skills for memorizing & reciting epic-length compositions.

""No, nothing's ever lost. We have ways to shake down your clinkers for you."
"But I've tried to remember!"
"Don't try. It'll come when we need it. All of us have photographic memories, but spend a lifetime learning how to block off the things that are really in there. Simmons here has worked on it for twenty years and now we've got the method down to where we can recall anything that's been read once. Would you like, some day, Montag, to read Plato's Republic?"
"Of course!"
"I am Plato's Republic. Like to read Marcus Aurelius? Mr. Simmons is Marcus."
"How do you do?" said Mr. Simmons.
"Hello," said Montag.
"I want you to meet Jonathan Swift, the author of that evil political book, Gulliver's Travels! And this other fellow is Charles Darwin, and-this one is Schopenhauer, and this one is Einstein, and this one here at my elbow is Mr. Albert Schweitzer, a very kind philosopher indeed. Here we all are, Montag. Aristophanes and Mahatma Gandhi and Gautama Buddha and Confucius and Thomas Love Peacock and Thomas Jefferson and Mr. Lincoln, if you please. Ronson said he admired the stance Linehan took on the Today show concerning "[putting] people in difficult oppositional situations". I don't recall what that stance was but the above is an overinterpretation of Ronson's words (whatever we may think about him being wrong to want to platform L at all)

I believe in these times of hatred & division we must cultivate the capacity to entertain perspectives contrary to ours, and use them to grow, not rigidify, our own world view. Post-Homer, such a capacity was to become the animating force of Athenian democracy. Preferable to preaching to the chorós.
