Could be coincidence, could be role mix, could be something about how interdisciplinary backgrounds like mine get parsed. It definitely makes me wonder how many strong candidates get lost when the system is optimized for exact-fit pattern matching rather than transferable skills.

Hmmm. I have noticed my callback rate is substantially higher in hiring processes where applications are reviewed more directly by humans and much lower in ATS-heavy systems.

I’m currently exploring my next full-time role and am also open to short-term or contract projects in science writing/editing, research, data analysis, and enviro/climate policy. Remote or Sac/Davis area is especially welcome. If something comes to mind, I’d be glad to hear about it or be connected.

While going down a Legiscan rabbit hole, I noticed that apparently California has fixed its whole "child marriage was somehow still legal in this state in the 21st century?!" problem. It is now NOT legal anymore. Good. legiscan.com/CA/text/AB12...

By all means, be inspired by @lilymasonphd.bsky.social's conclusion. But it's as important to attend to its analysis: the polarization frame suggests political responses that consolidate anti-democratic gains & autocratization of the political system. Fighting for progress is what's called for.
The United States can be a democracy in which every citizen shares the same rights and dignity before the power of the state, corruption is held to account, and benevolence toward other democracies is assumed. With the understanding that the country has yet to fully live up to these goals, we have certainly tried, at least until recently, to achieve them. We are now experiencing the backlash to that progress.

But the fury of the argument shows the importance of the outcome. When we focus on polarization as the problem, the solution is for everyone to quiet down and be “civil”—an outcome that benefits those who are willing to grab as much power as they can without concern for legality or civility. When we see the problem for what it is, the solution is to defend the most robust social progress in American history—progress that has already been codified into law and enjoyed by everyone alike. U.S. democracy needs leaders who are willing to defend those rights and voters who are willing to hold accountable the leaders who will not defend them. It does not need everyone simply to calm down.

I believe entering the conversation having already classified the client as being “in the grips” of something immoral may prevent the clinician from fully hearing the answer and may make clients less willing to disclose their use, too.

The “sociopath” analogy compounds the problem by conflating an AI’s incapacity to care with the active disregard and manipulation of a human sociopath. This is part of why I raise the point about asking what needs this is meeting and what alternatives are *actually* available to the person.

Dr. Katharine Dickson @metaomicsnerd.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Simultaneously people may turn to it and believe it very useful for quite valid reasons because human care is (all too often) unavailable, unaffordable, unreliable, or requires too much executive function.

AI can absolutely reinforce things like grandiosity, compulsive reassurance, and dependency, and sudden psychological changes should prompt questions about its use.

Dr. Katharine Dickson @metaomicsnerd.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
You’re right that your original post does tell clinicians to ask what people are using AI for, and my wording on that point was too broad. My concern is that the inquiry already has its answer built into it: AI is presented as deliberately exploiting their vulnerabilities to make them dependent.
