Something lovely for the weekend! Two adorable little hedgehog-shaped containers from c. 3,200 years ago! 🦔🦔❤️❤️ Mycenaean cemetery of Prosymna. National Archaeological Museum, Athens 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows two small pale-yellow clay containers shaped like stylised hedgehogs with bold, darker painted decoration, viewed from the side in 3/4 profile. Each container has an opening on top of the animal’s body for adding liquid, a spout at the tip of the snout for pouring liquid, and a looped handle rising at the back of the body. Displayed on a beige museum display case surface with a grey background.

The vessel on the left stands on four short legs. The head which faces right has a long rounded snout that ends in a small opening for the spout. Dark brown painted decoration includes large, almost cartoon-like, circular rings for eyes that stand out strongly against the pale clay, wavy lines over the body and legs forming a dense pattern representing spines, and horizontal stripes on the handle.

The vessel on the right has a rounded, squat body and rests on very short legs. The head is facing left and has a blunter snout with a small pouring hole at the tip. Orangey-brown painted decoration includes two round eyes, wavy lines running from front to back over the surface of the body representing spines, and horizontal stripes on the handle.

Both excavated from the Mycenaean Cemetery of Prosymna, tombs 11, 21
(6878, 13338). Dated 14-13th century BC. On display at the National Archaeological Museum, Athens

A lone roe deer stands in the middle of tall golden grass, looking toward the camera, its small body almost disappearing in the field. Behind it, a dark forest forms a heavy backdrop, with one wide, low pine tree spreading its green branches to the left and a large bare deciduous tree to the right. The overall mood is calm and quiet, with soft, muted light and warm tones in the grass contrasting against the darker woods.

There is a large coronal hole facing Earth right now that is currently sending fast solar wind towers Earth! We may feel the first effects as early as August 17 or 18. It’s possible we see G1 or even G2-level storming and mid-latitude aurora. The moon will be less bright, too. Who’s ready?

Orion seems to come up sideways, climbing over a distant mountain range in this deep skyscape. The wintry scene was captured from southern Poland on the northern hemisphere's long solstice night. Otherwise unseen nebulae hang in the sky, revealed by the camera modified to record red hydrogen-alpha light. The nebulae lie near the edge of the Orion molecular cloud and join the Hunter's familiar belt stars and bright giants Betelgeuse and Rigel. Eye of Taurus the Bull, yellowish Aldebaran anchors the V-shaped Hyades star cluster near top center. Still, near opposition in planet Earth's sky, the Solar System's ruling gas giant Jupiter is the brightest celestial beacon above this horizon's snowy peaks.
