but orkney has more than just neolithic remains! orkney was annexed by orkney in the 9th century and remained under their rule until it was given to Scotland in the 15th century. we visited a viking church from the 10th century, situated on an island accessible only in low tide:

about 40-50 people would have lived here. it was continuously inhabited for about 600 years, something like 5000 years ago (!!!!) until it was abandoned for reasons we don't quite understand.... the site was discovered in 1850 when a storm quite literally blew it open

luckily the weather was on our side and the sun came out for the main event of the day: a visit to skara brae, a neolithic village so well preserved they even found original furniture. absolutely fascinating place:

then orkney itself! probably most well known for having the best well preserved neolithic sites in Europe, we start with the standing stones of stenness and the ring of brodgar, dating to about 2300bc. surrounded by water, it really does feel like magic can happen here

the orkney islands are an archipelago at the very tippy top of Scotland. they have a fascinating history, in prehistory, myth (birthplace of various arthuriana figures, rich folklore), viking rule, and even crucial roles in WWI and WWII. reaching there took us a whole day and it was so worth it
