I wanted to share some background on the recent correction to Hall & Thompson's 2018 paper. This correction has significant implications. The conventional wisdom that moderate candidates perform better in general elections is not supported by the data when properly analyzed.🧵
A screenshot of a tweet from Andy Hall (@ahall_research) posted at 7:12 AM on March 6, 2025. The tweet discusses an update to a 2018 APSR paper by Dan Thompson and Andy Hall, which estimated vote share and turnout effects for more-extreme House candidates in the 2006–2014 period. Hall states that Adam Bonica identified an important imbalance in their data, leading them to doubt their original findings. The tweet includes a link to the updated paper and summarizes four key takeaways: (1) The previously estimated effects of more-extreme nominees on vote share and turnout are weaker than originally thought and should not be relied on. (2) The study design does not support conclusions about the relationship between turnout penalty and vote share penalty for extreme nominees. (3) While presidential election data before 2006 does not show similar imbalances, the primary regression discontinuity (RD) design is fragile and requires large amounts of data. (4) The study should not be interpreted as evidence that penalties for extreme nominees have remained large in recent elections. Hall thanks Adam Bonica for identifying the issue and expresses gratitude for the chance to update the paper.
