Attending a vendor event where every session and keynote is asking me "What's your strategy for thriving as a professional if you're not embedding AI in every aspect of your work??" I mean, my strategy is to know things, solve problems, and not offload my thinking to a fucking plagiarism machine.

a good piece of advice i once got is to disregard any despairing thoughts about the trajectory of your life that you might have after 9 PM. those are the night thoughts and we do not speak of them

Just finished reading Make Me Better by @sarahgailey.bsky.social and holy shit it is going to live in my head for a WHILE. Among other things, I'm left with this profound sense of sadness thinking about the commodification of community. The book is *great*, and heavy, and I really loved it.

I was just thinking about how wonderful it is to have a representative who I can count on to vote in line with my values at least 95% of the time. My senators...lol, not so much.

Doctors I trust more than RFK Jr
A very old six pack of Dr. Pepper, which despite being a set of inanimate objects is still capable of infinitely better medical advice than RFK Jr.

This Love Letter is kind of witchy, exquisitely open, gently reflects on the difference between active and still beauty, and uses capitalization in the best sort of way (Making Use Of It speaks to my soul). It's perfect, is what I'm saying, and I'll be pestering all of my loved ones to read it.

Maybe my favorite thing about this series is that they all strike such an aspirational note for me, even if I haven't thought to aspire to that particular thing before. I can't put my finger on exactly *what* I aspire to be or do after reading this one, but I know I feel it, and it's just lovely.

"...in that moment my annoyance evaporates, because I remember what they think is happening." I mean, damn. May I learn to receive help that I didn't ask for with that same generosity of spirit and thinking well of the other person.

Time to post it again.
A meme from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. In the top panel, one man labeled "literally every company" hands a plate labeled "AI" to a man labeled "me." In the bottom panel, the man labeled "me" nonchalantly tosses the plate down the hallway, discarding it with casual disdain while the first man watches.

Today I made the probably unwise decision to buy Balatro on my tablet. Did I already have it on my laptop? Of course. Is having easy access to this delightful and addictive game going to help my productivity or sleep? Obviously not.

financial advice in a weird time: -- develop a plan -- find friends who support you -- preferably 10 of them -- steal $160 million from the Bellagio, the Mirage, and the MGM Grand -- yes those are Terry Benedict's casinos -- get your wife back -- one of the friends should be Don Cheadle btw simple

I have more than enough t-shirts in my closet, but this one was way too good to resist.
A photo of a bearded, middle-aged white man wearing a gray t-shirt with a possum, the trans pride colors, and a message that reads "Protect Trans Youth."

old Soviet joke for our times: Guy stops by the newsstand every day, scans the front page, doesn’t buy the paper. One day the vendor asks what he’s up to. Guy says: “looking for an obituary.” Vendor says “those are towards the back of the paper, comrade.” Guy says: “not the one I’m looking for.”

don’t know who needs to hear this but empathy doesn’t require eagerness. you don’t have to be excited about helping other people, you do it because it’s right and because the alternatives are worse

Has anyone else turned down a vendor meeting because the company's name was too dumb? I mean, they also have "Powered by AI!" plastered all over their site, which is admittedly a better reason to say no, but if I'm honest the name was a dealbreaker even before I looked at the website.

Learned some disheartening things about my employer this week, so much of the past 2 days has been spent making a few people much higher on the org chart than me squirm. Seeking accountability from those in power is an important muscle to exercise, so I'm glad to do it. I'm real tired, though.

This. People care. So many folks are trying. And holding up a light to the darkness. So many are encouraging each other to do the same. You don't see all the activism, all the care. But it's there.

Began the day with some supportive work and then a lovely little Imbolc ritual with a handful of friends. Among other things, it was a useful reminder that community is at the center of how we survive hard times. Reaching out and asking for help is a powerful act of magic in itself.

We fight much harder for someone or something we still care about & believe in, than something we already gave up on. The most vital thing to do in the face of a deluge designed to overwhelm is to -not- give up. We must persistently care about & protect what we cherish & know is worth fighting for.

Awfully short calls to my senators today, since both of them have disabled their voicemail. Really feeling the love of representative democracy today!

OK, I'm going to take the like as a yes. So, to be clear, this thread hits on three things - dealing with worry, dealing with feeling helpless, and focusing on limited available paths to productively help. Maybe some of this stuff will work for you - all I can say for sure is that it has helped me.

I've built a machine that can be Confidently Wrong. It can also make pictures that all look a bit the same, as well as make a video of you kissing any celebrity or person you know. In payment, I'd like to boil the world's oceans dry, & steal all literature. For some reason, my head is not on a spike

Today's agenda involves roughly equal parts domesticity (making a big pot of soup), escapism (turn based games that make me think fondly of X-COM, among other things) and support (local mutual aid contributions). Home, self, and community all need much more than that, but baby steps still count.
