Film 13/31. Shout out this one for a genuinely tense moment involving an episode of Dora the Explorer.

Film 12/31. I didn’t love this to the same degree as the first one, but it’s still a good time.

Yeah this Wendy’s Pop-Punk situation would have been really fun in 2014, but now it feels a bit sad and dated.

Thank you both! It's interesting that what I was getting at is that it didn't feel weird hearing The Postal Service mixed in with newer kind downtempo lofi(ish) music (eg Billy Eillish, Blood Orange), but that when I was a youth music that was equivalently old felt distinctive and out of place.

Nick, the Melanated Magician (they/them) @melanatedmagus.blacksky.app · 11h

So a question for y'all who are a bit older than I am: Does the music of your youth (late teenagerdom - mid 20s) still sound contemporary to you? Or does it sound like it's from a different era?

Nick, the Melanated Magician (they/them) @melanatedmagus.blacksky.app · 11h

Just heard We Will Become Silhouettes in the student center and keyed into the fact that we're as far away from that being contemporary music as Prince's Controversy was from my being in undergrad and now I'm having A Crisis.

What's funny is it absolutely worked, and I think was as good a use of Sydney Sweeny I've seen. Also Tom Arnold is fully in his bag in this one?

Film 6/31. I’m blown away by this; it was quite graphic, but not gratuitously so, had just the right amount of heart and levity but was still effective horror.

Is your brain full of mind vampires?

A comic all in red, depicting a man with a cut out of his brain with a vampire skulking inside of it.
Big text at the top says "is your brain full of mind vampires? you are not alone."
The vampire says "bleh! bleh! I am 2000 years old. Bleh! your only desire now is to find my amulet."
The man says "Dang, gotta find that amulet."

Further text at the bottom says "there is no cure for mind vampires but there is support and management. Know the warning signs, get help early."

It was okay! I didn't love the pieces that tried to engage with voodoo (they were just on the right side of racist caricature but also a bit boring), but otherwise it was a pretty good entry in the "weird little guys do weird things" genre a la Ghoolies or Puppet Master, just with weed.

I almost forgot to start my Halloween ritual. As usual, the challenge is to watch 31 horror films before the end of the month, ideally 1 a day and focusing on things that are new to me. I’ll keep this threaded with what I watch along the way.

apropos of this latest round I will just mention that there has been antisemitism on the left since the beginning. the people who invented anticapitalism did so in an environment in which Judaism had been equated with bad economic practices for 600 years already. AND they didn’t know any Jews

Lately I've been thinking a lot about Terry Pratchett's "Reaper Man" and AI. He was so ahead of his time in so many ways - or maybe squarely in his time but so many missed the very obvious signposts of where we were heading. Gonna be spoilers in this thread for a 25-year old book.
