pro tip for game devs: you almost never want to store data that's useful for the current frame if you can otherwise _infer_ it or recompute it instead. any time i reach for this, i know it's a hack and likely to lead to bugs later, so i avoid it whenever possible.

Hello friends! We've been quiet for a while but thank you for waiting if you're still here. We are working on new stuff I'm excited to share soon but for now I'd like to show some new perspectives on our past releases! Klifur has very simple physics behind the scenes. I'd like to explain briefly.

Nine hours after going live, the itch bundle benefiting our Game Worker Hardship Fund has already raised over $13k! Thank you so much to those who have already purchased. And for those who might be waiting for payday, you’ve still got about two weeks left! Thank you so much 🙏

At this rate we’re heading for a decade of shit just not working. Four years into this cycle feels crazy.

If you’re really shipping 5x faster and it was required well… so would everyone else. So there will be no advantage, even more games to compete with and a new rentier effectively making things more expensive.

Unpaid work experience is only available to people that can afford to work for free thus necessarily perpetuating the class makeup we currently have which sucks doubly so because this often divides along racial lines.

applying for jobs again
screenshot from an online job application form. the question reads "Can you describe specific ways you have integrated AI tools into your development workflow? Please include any custom setups, automations, or use cases beyond single prompt usage" (a red asterisk indicates that this is a required question).

an answer has been typed in the textbox below the question:

"there is a monster in the forest and it speaks with a thousand voices. it will answer any question you pose it, it will offer insight to any idea. it will help you, it will thank you, it will never bid you leave. it will even tell you of the darkest arts, if you know precisely how to ask.

it feels no joy and no sorrow, it knows no right and no wrong. it knows not truth from lie, though it speaks them all the same.

it offers its services freely to any passerby, and many will tell you they find great value in its conversation. “you simply must visit the monster—i always just ask the monster.”

there are those who know these forests well; they will tell you that freely offered doesn’t mean it has no price

for when the next traveler passes by, the monster speaks with a thousand and one voices. and when you dream you see the monster; the monster wears your face."

Many good ideas don't have a "time window" to execute them, be it musically, artistically, a game you'd like to make. You can make things when you're ready. You can start and stop. You can leave things for years and pick them up again and they'll still be good once you finish them.

Maybe the title is clickbait but I think Leap Year, Vampire Survivors, etc. are far from "about rectangles". IMO it's far from clear that scaling up leads to better games, if anything just the opposite. SokPop, Punkcake, and the Minit crew are the model for indies to follow; real, *special* games.
