The best nonfiction book I've read in a looooooong time. Book awards were invented for books like this. Scholars, take note...this is a book that unites academia and storytelling in the most thoughtful and rigorous way! Great editing from @katekilla.bsky.social and h/t @bostonglobe.com

I just read and highly recommend Beings by @ilanaslightly.bsky.social! Ilana Masad brilliantly weaves together three stories from the early 1960s to present day about people surviving at the margins of society, alien sightings, and memory. Out in September. islandbooks.com/book/9781639...

somehow, Meet Me at the Crossroads received a starred Kirkus Review
a screenshot of a starred review of meet me at the crossroads from Kirkus (a top five percent hater in the business), the tagline is a brilliant, magical tale of grief and growth. It begins "A girl contends with family, faith, and loss in a world with doors to other realms. No one knows where the doors came from. They just appeared one day, seven doors around the world that open to a magical, confusing world. Some people go through them and find wonders: plants with druglike properties, the ghosts of loved ones, healing powers. Some go through and immediately "pop." New Eula Biss in @orionmagazine.bsky.social and it's (of course) a marvel, about gardening and resistance writ large orionmagazine.org/article/forc...
It isn’t easy, gardening. Any force applied to the project of making something grow is met with an array of opposing forces. This, the sensation of force meeting force, is invigorating in its way, or at least edifying. When else do you feel it, the palpable pressure of an ecosystem, the weight of other kinds of life bearing down on your own, the limits of your own will?

The specific menace and danger here, the vigor of the prose on parenting and being parented. Trying to stay in a place of “public influence” to avoid violence at home. And the pair of twists at the end. I was completely captivated by this book.
