I also presented at the Queer and Feminist Perspectives on Japanese Pop Cultures Symposium organized by @aurelievpetit.bsky.social and @meganrose.bsky.social! I spoke about placemaking, race, and gender in the context of #cosplay. Met lots of scholars doing incredible work 🙏🏽

Excited to be giving a public lecture at Kanagawa University, 21st of May about my research for my book on Harajuku (currently in the works)💫💫 “Hyperfeminine Harajuku: Exploring Queer KAWAII Practices in a Tokyo Subcultural District” It’s both online and in person- details on the flyer 🌈💕
Abstract:
In this talk I explore the creative practices of Harajuku’s subcultures. Harajuku is a town in Tokyo that is a safe space for women, men and gender diverse people as early as the 1970s. Over recent decades, numerous KAWAII fashion subcultures have emerged in this district, each with their own specific conventions, aesthetics, purposes and intents including lolita fashion, decora fashion, yume kawaii, fairy kei, menhera. KAWAII is a significant cultural site for marginalized people to find collective safety and creatively work through their experiences and find a place of belonging. In the increasingly fractured social landscape of Tokyo, an eclectic group of artists, photographers, musicians, and designers come together in a constellation of spectacular bodies to play with KAWAII fashion. Their efforts are supported by underground queer feminist movements of Tokyo that protest, disrupt, and agitate through art, talk, and zine collectives in a blaze of shimmering hot pink.
The talk considers the differing ways KAWAII is queered by these groups as an expression of dis/affection, in/dependence and a/sexuality. Queering KAWAII refers to a process of estrangement and de- familiarisation of cuteness as a form of hyperfemininity. As part of global queer femme cultures, hyperfemininity contaminates gender binaries, and exaggerates and pushes the parameters of patriarchal femininity as a form of disruption, experimentation, and reflection. Centred on the affective stories, fashion objects and garments and texts that KAWAII fashion practitioners create, this talk explores the social motivations, politics and ideologies of this subcultural movement. The talk traverses themes of marginality, vulnerability, and women and gender diverse people’s defiance in facing structural sexism, sexual violence, queerphobia, and ableism.

Hi there, everyone!

My name is Yamauchi Nao.
I was born in Japan in 1993, and I identify as non-binary and genderfluid.
I currently make manga and live with
my partner and our dog.

Right now, I'm looking for publishers interested in publishing this book in languages other than Japanese.

A book about fashion
by a non-binary person living in Japan

I love wearing a lot of vintage
secondhand clothing, but I also
wear other styles like lolita!
I’ve also written some essays about
my outfits and about being non-binary.

Includes 5 essays, 2 comics,
4 columns and 62 illustrations

If any of this sounds interesting to you,
please spread the word about my book
or contact me directly if you are interested
in publishing it overseas!

Email me at yamauchinaomanga@gmail.com

I wrote this book to spread awareness
about non-binary people and fight against
stereotypes and discrimination.

I hope you’ll consider reading it
and helping me get the word out!

My partner and I met some people at university and ended up having a wedding ceremony thanks to them. The only blood relative who came was my older sister. This is the special outfit I chose to wear at the wedding reception, although I actually wear it all the time… The KENZO pants are a little motheaten at the back, so I need to get them patched up. I love this outfit’s beautiful silhouette, and the complex embroidery on the jacket spices it up a lot.

It’s been a while since I participated in the Tokyo Pride parade. In an interview before the parade this year, one of the organizers opposed the use of the phrase “give us our human rights.” I was so shocked and sad that I felt like I had to do something, so I quickly slapped together a sign and jumped on the train. This is what we were wearing. It was rough being called “ma’am” over and over again as I wandered the booths at Pride. I didn’t feel like I belonged there.

Nightgown I found at a vintage store called “curious” in Omotesando

Life is so short. We are all going to die. Imagine choosing to inspire hate instead of sowing love. Imagine choosing profit over people. Imagine seeing the worst rather than hoping for the best. Love is what makes life tolerable and good. Those who take that away are the cruelest, most wretched.

It must be difficult to see all the capaciousness that comes with being queer – all the potential, the joy – and compare it to your own small life, one increasingly defined by a toxic, rigid definition of masculinity that requires aggression, cruelty, and isolation. At the same time, you have to work to be left behind in these moments – to see the possibilities of queer futures as excluding you rather than enjoying all it has to offer in terms of how we understand what it means to be a person, a family, a community.

[“Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisoned by the enemy, don’t we consider it his duty to escape? The moneylenders, the know-nothings, the authoritarians have us all in prison; if we value the freedom of the mind and soul, if we’re partisans of liberty, then it’s our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can.”]

This! Though I'd argue we have to start much earlier, encouraging boys to express emotion, cultivate close friendships, and learn to care for themselves and others, the way we do for girls. With that socialization, men would be less reliant on women and better partners to women they partner with.

Enjoying Paramo’s hard-hitting new book. Immediately, I see overlaps with the marginalized communities I work with in Japan. I can already see links with otaku studies and how people (all a/genders) have been treated both socially in Japan and in journalistic and academic writing.
Cover of Michael Paramo’s 2024 book Ending the Pursuit: Asexuality, Aromantics & Agender Identity“In my late teens and early twenties, I came to realize that I also did not experience sexual or romantic attraction nor was I interested in forming any such relationship built on these feelings. I grew similarly distant from the expectations of what it meant to be a “man”.”“For asexual, aromantic, or agender people, coming out is less likely to produce reactions of outright approval or disapproval than it is to provoke confusion or disbelief at the mere existence of such of an identity. This is because each of these concepts challenge fundamental ideas relate to cisheteropatriarchy”
