Entirely true, though I suspect the intention is that they'll be kicked into employment at 16 and not waste time on FE/HE.

Yeah, for sure, and like if someone who is suspected of a crime dies the police don't just stop investigating. But I'm not surprised that these investigations are more about managing the current situation than setting the record straight for posterity.

Ofcom should step in and do something about all the Guardian articles which leave you guessing for several borderline-illiterate paragraphs before confirming in passing that it is aimed at their Australian readers

Yeah. Tbh I think it makes sense that the internal disciplinary process for MPs doesn't have any power over people who are not current MPs but the fact that there are seldom any wider career consequences is a real indictment of the whole establishment.

Tell you what, is combating Musk's politics helped or hindered by us joining in the game of litigating who is and is not a true man of the West?

Dave @mediocredave.bsky.social · 26/07/2026
I wish people would get over this irresistible need to bring up Musk's nationality (or Farage's wife, or Trump's grandfather, etc etc). I know you try to rationalise it as a critique of hypocrisy but it always just feels like gleefully pointing out the stain of foreignness.

A European settler who made his fortune in US industry is not from the West? (the last post isn't important, I just included it so you know you don't have to reply telling me the same thing).
Screenshot of an Elon Musk tweet calling someone a traitor to the west. Reply from an account I've anonymised "Weird how am Afrikaaner thinks he's from the West". Then a reply clarifying that Musk is not Afrikaaner.

Why are all the replies saying "I did know that actually!" and not "What are you talking about, that is not how money works, you are a charlatan who has no business selling financial advice"?

That miniseries was quite good. It had all sorts of stuff about the brutality of the industrial revolution.

Though the wording in that Smith quote is profoundly insulting to working class intellect, Braverman's point is that the division of labour, automation, and deskilling mean that the people who do the work are not required (are actively prevented!) from understanding how essential processes function.

Dave @mediocredave.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Braverman also quotes Adam Smith from 1776, just to emphasise that this dynamic isn't historically new
In the progress of the division of labour, the employment of the far greater part
of those who live by labour, that is, of the great body of the people, comes to
be confined to a few very simple operations, frequently to one or two. But the understandings of the greater part of men are necessarily formed by their
ordinary employments. The man whose whole life is spent performing a few
simple operations, of which the effects too are, perhaps, always the same, or
very nearly the same, has no occasion to exert his understanding, or to exercise his invention in finding out expedients for removing difficulties which never occur. He naturally loses, therefore, the habit of such exertion, and generally becomes as stupid and ignorant as it is possible for a human creature to become.

Harry Braverman: "[capitalist society dictates] that the ignorance of the great masses of the workers and the concentration of all engineering knowledge in a few specialists are desirable and, in fact, essential conditions rather than, as it would seem from a human point of view, an abomination."

I was always baffled by people who thought Trump getting elected was the worst thing that could ever happen and couldn't possibly imagine that him being in power would actually be worse.

Appreciate these two historic footballing nations putting on a very boring final to discourage Americans from taking too much interest in the sport after this.

One reason to be sad that England didn't make it to the World Cup final is that we don't get to see England fans booing the half time show, scandalising American broadcasters by calling Justin Bieber a cunt.

The BBC does call Hamas a terrorist group. So, if that's what the right is attacking it over, it's not based in reality. And we don't have to take it seriously as a counter balance criticism from the left.

Accusations of bias actually have specific content that can be assessed. The left attack the BBC for justifying a genocide, the right attack it for having too many black people on screen. These aren't equivalent extremes that cancel each other out leaving only the enlightened centre.

Some former supporters of Keir Starmer are demonstrating maturity by doing threads explaining what positive expectations they had and how they were disappointed. I am demonstrating maturity by not quote-tweeting each one pointing out how patently naive they were. Together, we are growing.

I think that if you said to Pesto that the country and British democracy are in this parlous state *because of* people like Howe, Lawson, Brown and Osborne, rather than despite them, it simply would not compute for him. It’d sound like the way adults talk in a Charlie Brown cartoon.

Got a ticket to see The Odyssey next week and I can pretty much guarantee that the criticism I'm going to come away with will be that it is too tediously deferential to the source material and needed more irreverence, camp, and adaptation.

(for context, this was carefully cut out of a post-game rant saying that England hadn't played well enough despite winning, that mentality was a meaningless metric compared to quality of football, and that the interviewer was a fucking idiot for asking him about it)

lmao at the BBC selectively editing Tuchel's "this is pure mentality, you can bottle it up and sell it" into the England exit montage.

From the 2025 UK National Security Strategy: "The UK defence industrial base will be redefined to include academia, dual-use civilian-military companies, financial services, technologists and trade unions." www.gov.uk/government/p...
6. The forthcoming Defence Industrial Strategy sets out plans to build one of the most dynamic defence industrial ecosystems in the world, through targeted investment, procurement reform and creating a wider export market. We are increasing investment in priority sectors through a new National Wealth Fund investment for defence companies. The UK defence industrial base will be redefined to include academia, dual-use civilian-military companies, financial services, technologists and trade unions. To support this, we are scaling up the National Security Strategic Investment Fund, investing more in companies which address our national security and defence capability requirements and growing the UK’s early-stage dual-use technology ecosystem.
