The academic urge to make things longer than they need to be—today’s flavor: “in a word, x” instead of just “x,”

Currently been living off $300/paychecks for months because my grad institution keeps having “systems errors” and won’t give me my stipend, and I’ve yet to have a single adjunct position pay me for this semester. . . “There, there”s appreciated

I’m teaching a sci-fi class this semester for the honors college. It’s my first time (besides first-year comp) that I’m teaching something out of my wheelhouse. So far, it’s been DELIGHTFUL! I’m having a great time! Making them read Margaret Cavendish’s Blazing World to start!

The ancient dream of turning lead into gold is now a reality – but it’s not quite what the alchemists might have hoped for.

Had my first TT job interview via Zoom the other day. Here’s advice I DIDN’T get in my mock interview: Don’t do it next to a fruit bowl! In slow motion, a fruit fly drifted my way, & w/ one unassuming breath, ‘twas inhaled. Obviously, u can’t see it on Zoom, so I had to act like nothing happened.
