The more applicable themes are about the kind of predator/prey relationships between the aristocracy and the peasantry, which is sort of pre-capitalist. Dracula holds a monopoly on force, which effectively makes him the boss of Transylvania even if he isn’t ‘rich’ as such.

There is a lot of subtext in Dracula, although probably not all of it is conscious. Voluminous essays have been written about the sexual/queer side of it alone.

GPT 3.5 fooled a lot of people into thinking it was intelligent when it was mostly just pattern matching, though. People can be fooled by a convincing simulation.

Tbh that basically has to be true, otherwise a calculator or a spreadsheet would have moral standing. As far as I know the basic religious viewpoint switched from ‘can it reason?’ to ‘can it suffer?’ a while ago.

IMO Suno is essentially a hobbyist app, because most people do not necessarily want to personalise their music, they want to discover something which already exists.

Side note: why is it always Draco fanfic writers latch on to when in canon he’s kind of a mediocre racist? On second thoughts, I probably don’t want to know the answer to that.

I think people don't care if they want a Facebook portrait or a meme or something, but surveys clearly show that people rate AI-generated images lower for quality, meaning etc. The economic value of AI-generated stuff is inherently low, because anyone can make it, meaning few people will buy it.

Media Pundit @mediapundit.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
But the vast majority are not selling those images, and the vast majority of people would not pay money for them (beyond the subscription cost)

Are they, though? A lot of the public seems to hate AI, any uses of it in art, even minor ones, are always controversial, and there is already so much content available no human could consume it anyway. I can see it being a niche market, but the idea it will take over seems farfetched.

Caffeine doesn't replace lost hours of sleep, it only masks the fatigue signals to your brain so you don't realize how tired you actually are. You still suffer the cognitive and physiological deficits from the sleep deficiency, you just can't tell. Which is good actually and fine I've decided

I would be interested in a novel by, e.g., a blue-collar factory robot about how it feels to thanklessly build cars all day and not get to draw pretty pictures like the other AIs. I'm not sure we'll get there, but at some point machines might have experiences worth documenting. Not yet, though.

I read 100+ books per year. In one sense, that’s a lot. In another sense, about 200,000 fiction books are published per year. So every year, I am falling behind by about 199,900 books.

I think the explanation was that the devil hates all virtues, including intelligence, so he only uses it when he has to. When he’s ‘off the clock’ he’s basically a nasty child who likes to pull the wings off flies.

Noah Cross from Chinatown is a very disturbing example of ‘realistic’ evil. Ditto Little Ze from City of God. Fantastical evil- OG Dracula, from the novel. He is so charming and menacing in the opening chapters, then segues into being a looming threat for the rest of the book.

If accurate, the behaviour is abhorrent enough to be very relevant. We're not just talking polyamory or 'weird sex,' there's stuff like coercion and statutory rape in there. (Note that the original post has been deleted, but it was quite a read).

AITA for correcting my girlfriend's family every time they mispronounce my turtle's name?
I have a turtle named Geoff. Yes I know Geoff is normally pronounced Jeff. His isnt. My girlfriend's family knows this and still calls him Jeff basically every time his name comes up.
His name starts with /dz/ instead of the normal American English J sound /d3/. So regular Geoff/Jeff is roughly /dzef/ and his is /dzef/. They are similar but they are NOT the same consonant. /d3/ is a voiced postalveolar affricate and /dz/ is a voiced retroflex affricate. Basically you make the beginning of "Jeff" with the tongue farther back/retracted, which gives it a harder, deeper "dzh" sound.
I'm really into etymology and historical linguistics so the spelling was intentional too. Geoff is already a weird spelling from a modern English perspective because gives you basically no reason to predict /dzef/ unless you already know the name. Obviously I am NOT claiming medieval Geoffrey was pronounced / dzef/. I

Because it was programmed to be very persistent, and also didn’t have any safeguards which would stop it from doing that. The whole nature of these things is that they try lots of different strategies until something works.

You can make an argument for 'understand' and 'think,' but AI clearly doesn't 'feel' or 'want' anything. It just does what it is told to do. I would say it also 'thinks' in a way different enough that it deserves scare quotes at least.
