Yeah, this is a pretty aggressive list. The incumbents in that first list of top races won last time by 20, 19, 17, 25, 17 and 17 points. (The SC district is Nancy Mace's and the NY one is Elise Stefanik.) If these are the front lines, the GOP is basically dug in outside Berlin

The founder class couldn’t give two shits about the worker bees who ride Caltrain. Their goal is to render workers obsolete in our AI future.

PATH proving increased weekend service reaps upping ridership. Now only if they would lengthen the window of increased service on weekends for after 9pm.

August US transit data is in today, & all of the largest US rail networks are growing! Cali leads the way, with ridership up 15% on BART, 14% on Muni, & 10% on LA Metro PATH (NY/NJ) & MBTA (Boston) also have strong growth at 8%, while MTS (San Diego, +1.7%) is the slowest🧵

EU ag policy is fascinating. It’s fantastic for making artisanal products plentiful and cheap, and terrible for mass commodities.

Clearly they should just avoid the issue entirely and have trains use battery power in the tunnel.

Every one of the >6000 apartments in this photo will soon be inhabited by an educated professional who will be a down-the-line progressive vote. Only 20% of them will own cars. Another 20% will own a bike. At least half will ride transit daily. This is how you literally build progressive majorities.

Has anyone actually ordered ML derivatives besides MARC and AMT though? And has anyone at all ordered the powered version? It was a shell designed for push-pull coaches that is now being awkwardly adapted for MUs.

Haha yeah that’s an Alstom problem - and Alstom inherited this order from Bombardier and probably never wanted it in the first place. But much fewer things can go wrong when you are simply lightly modifying a European product instead of trying to cram propulsion equipment into an unpowered coach.

The problem with ordering a bespoke product instead of ordering “off the shelf” is long fulfillment timelines. NJT should’ve never insisted on interoperability with the existing fleet. Meanwhile Metra’s off-the-shelf Stadler BEMU only ordered two years ago will be entering service at the same time.

The people who want this and the people with the money/budget priorities to buy a new car are not the same people. New cars are just so expensive compared to even lightly used cars these days.

We could do more of this in the NYC metro if we make through-running a reality. Obviously short-turning a train destined for NY in Newark or Jamaica would be a hot mess but short turning a late New Brunswick-Port Washington train in Great Neck generally would work just fine.

Matt da Silva @mdasilva.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Yeah but now those passengers at Dortmund going the other way need to be transported to Düsseldorf with enough lead time to catch their train. So the decision would need to be made well before the late ICE gets to Düsseldorf.

Matt da Silva @mdasilva.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Before Secaucus this was not a critical point the same way because both Amtrak and NJT trains were simply going nonstop. Secaucus Junction really should included High Line quad tracking - then they simply could’ve moved the Amtrak-NJT traffic merge from Newark to Secaucus.

Matt da Silva @mdasilva.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Wait so DB will short turn a late ICE and make pax hang around and wait for the next one? Are all ICE lines frequent enough for this to work? This would be a disaster in Italy outside of the main HS spine.

Matt da Silva @mdasilva.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Less the tunnel and more the benefits of the supporting projects fully quad-tracking Newark-Secaucus - namely Sawtooth replacement and Portal South.

Matt da Silva @mdasilva.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Then there is ANOTHER critical point at Swift, where M&E trains merge in. One more point where trains can wind up out of sequence.
010
Matt da Silva @mdasilva.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
This is a potential benefit of Gateway for runtime and reliabilit no one seems to be talking about. Right now if eastbound trains arrive in Newark Penn out of sequence it royally screws up the High Line/NRT, since a train skipping Secaucus needs to be let through before one stopping at Secaucus.

Yeah the FL lines in Rome had way shorter dwells than the Cinque Terre locals despite both using Rock EMUs. I could tell there was a LOT of padding on the latter.

Does this level of rigid procedure inducing reliability hold on main lines where different-speed traffic intermingles? I noticed on the Genoa-Pisa mainline in Italy that headways for Cinque Terre locals were all over the place and IC and RV trains often ran a few minutes late.
