Yeah, Undercover was pretty rough. I'm watching Ashes to Ashes now, and while I'm not as big a fan of McGoohan episodes as some folks, it does feel like a nice throwback to the earlier episodes with the stately LA mansions and high-society drama.

Also in this episode: Richard Riehle, who always makes me think "oh hey, it's Wilford Brimley" until he starts talking.

As of this episode Columbo's nameless basset hound is 26 years old and still as spry as ever.

Peter Falk is just so good. I'm glad he got to play this part for so long.

I've reached the last few episodes of Columbo, and while the later entries have, on the whole, not been as good as the original series, I am still going to be very sad when there is no more 'new' Columbo to watch.

To put this in perspective chestnut trees used to be dominant species in the United States. Billions of trees were killed by fungal blight and now fully grown America chestnuts are functionally extinct. There is no getting them back. Ever. All for a data center. www.gadgetreview.com/one-of-ameri...

A rare 200-tree American chestnut grove in West Virginia may be cleared for data-center development, but the project denies the site is on its land.

It was a massive, massive mistake to restructure our entire society around the automobile, and even if we could gather the political will to unfuck ourselves it would still take decades and be immensely costly and disruptive to repair the social and ecological damage. This is a post about LLMs.

I thought it was weird that there didn’t seem to be defined opening and closing shifts but apparently that’s because once you’re done training they just schedule you from open to close until you hit 40 hours.

I just got my schedule for the rest of the month and it is completely ridiculous. They have me working multiple back-to-back 12 hour shifts and then random 4-7 hour days sprinkled in. I am beginning to see why the longest anyone on staff has been at the store is ten months.

this was difficult to read, but it's important to know people are currently in prison for 50+ years for attending a protest + one wasn't even at the protest, but got sentenced for 30 years for "concealing" anarchist zines

Took the truck in for an oil change (which costs about 2.5x what it did a year ago now) and that wasn't enough to get the 'check engine' light to turn off, so I get to spend another week driving around hoping nothing blows up and then spend more money I don't have getting it looked at.

The structure of the platform itself encourages bad-faith interaction and discourages sharing perspectives that can't be easily summed up on a bumper sticker. I don't think there's actually a solution to that other than having those conversations elsewhere (offline).

010

MC_Lovecraft @mclovecraft.selfhosted.social · 04/10/2026

I do think that the combination of low character limits and the highly public nature of this kind of social media make it a uniquely terrible place to have conversations about anything even a little bit controversial or sensitive.

And while it feels unique in some ways, in reality it is also only the latest in a history of botched executions going back years — YEARS — in numerous states. Please know: this is the reality of the death penalty in this country.

Anybody have any recommendations for an affordable "dumb" tv? The store where I bought this one doesn't even sell them anymore and the only ones I can find online are like 3x the price for a screen half the size.

The TV I bought with my first real paycheck more than 13 years ago just made a very loud snapping sound and died. I'm so bummed. I paid ~$300 for it back then and somehow I don't think I'll be able to find a "dumb" tv the same size for anything like that price now.

Finding old writing projects that I gave up on years ago always makes me feel like I have become a lesser version of myself than I used to be. I never had the knack for seeing things through to the end but I used to be able to at least put pen to page and crank out a few thousand words in a day.

I was initially tempted to write it off as 'bad' writing, but the truth is that it's an incredibly compelling structure, and I understand now why people get so attached to soap operas, even if the same tricks would never work in a medium that is expected to have a beginning, middle, and end.
