New paper! 🌲 We followed invasive Douglas-fir seedlings in Patagonia for 2 years Seedlings generally performed best at intermediate invasion stages, with survival linked to canopy openness. Local context matters for tree invasions! link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Last year, I publicly complained multiple times (see e.g. elevanth.org/blog/2025/07...) that the open access movement had been captured by publishers, and we are now worse off than before open access. Well people got mad at me for saying it. But I think things are still getting worse.

I can't stress enough how disrespectful it is when colleagues in the Global North publish papers about our realities without a single author from the region. It's not "just data." Context matters. Interpreting our realities through your own framework isn't just exclusionary, it's weaker science.

Every World Cup, you'd have people from abroad thinking they have the right take about our Argentinean Afro community 🙄. Racism definitely exists in Argentina, but u can't interpret racism here w the same lens as in Europe or the US. Plus, the Afro community has a voice, and they are not a monolith

Publication decisions are complicated by various types of power asymmetries, so being an author in any particular journal isn’t necessarily a reflection of a person’s values. But we all can try to break free from publishers with 30% profit margins.

Just published! 📄 We found that seed predation of a non-native conifer increased along a Patagonian precipitation gradient. Predation was higher in open microhabitats at low precipitation and in closed microhabitats at high precipitation, although the pattern depended on temporal context.
