Philanthrotainers—people who shamelessly monetize charitable actions—evoke outrage. But that outrage is bigger than the supposed moral transgression would normally arouse, argues @mbialek82.bsky.social. Why is that? They expose what we’d rather keep concealed: buff.ly/KfUjJfT

Superintendent Chalmers: Good lord, what is happening in there?
Skinner: An age effect.
Superintendent Chalmers: An age effect? At this time of the year, at this time of day, in this particular cohort, localized entirely within your kitchen?
Skinner: Yes.
Superintendent Chalmers: May I see it?
Skinner: No.

After 2 years its finally out! See for yourself whether songs in a foriegn vs native language are perceived as better or not? That was my experience, but it seems not a very popular one.

This sounds fascinating. I noticed very early on in my life in Poland that I was particularly interested in the lyrics of songs - something that barely happens to me with English ones. "Tata Kazika" was the very first one. Not the easiest choice. 🤣

Yeah, I was so surprised too. I was pretty sure I missed something untill having a conversation with Budescu. maybe translation indeed cause misunderstandings across languages, yet no one ever tested if it has any practical impact on decisions.

I feel a bit like this about open science. The reforms will likely lead to positive outcomes, even if we overestimate their ability to solve our problems (e.g., replication crisis) The open science movement got us to THINK about what we're doing. That's a positive spin-off if nothing else.

Another paper challenges #dualProcessTheory about #ethics: doi.org/10.1111/cogs... - no effect of reflection test prime - reflection tests about #math didn't predict utilitarian responses - reflection tests about #logic predicted more utilitarian AND more deontological responses
The undetected reflection test prime effect on moral judgments.Table 7 showing the CRT (a mathematical reflection test) failing to predict multiple explications of utilitarian responses to moral dilemmas. Process dissociation revealed more consistent correlations between reflection tests and moral dilemma judgments, but did not reveal that a mathematical reflection test (CRT) predicted utilitarian judgment. Moreover, what logical reflection predicted was more utilitarian AND more deontological responses (rather than more of one and less of the other). The general discussion (Section 5) admits that "correlations between reflective cognitive style and utilitarian judgment ...depended on how utilitarian judgment was measured and, most importantly, fluctuated depending on how cognitive style was assessed. This is in line with previous research emphasizing the instability of this relationship (Baron et al., 2015), and the fact that not all measures of cognitive style predict moral judgment in the same way (Byrd & Conway, 2019)."

We used different methods. AFAIK you gave the option to self-sacrifice or to sacrifice a stranger. Hence you asked whether they prefer utilitarian, deontological or self-sacrificial O. we gave them no third option - to save they had to self-sacrifice.

We know how to read those numbers. But for lay audiences, the relatives are mostly used as a rhetorical point, e.g. to create an impression of a threat or huge positive change. The risk of cancer doubled. The chances of bankruptcy decreased by 60%.

38% sounds impressive, but it's actually 13 percentage points. I hate this relative expression. Going from 2% to 1% would be a 50% decrease. This would be almost a 50% greater decrease than the reported 38% while constituting only 15% of the original decrease. Super helpful :)

These two papers, taken together, really cause a rethinking of behavioral economies. Rather than having anomalous risk preferences; it looks like people have complexity aversion to "hard" decisions, especially on valuation, which drives behavioral anomalies. Herbert Simon ftw.
