In visual cortical prostheses, the input stimulation pattern is a poor predictor of the resulting percept. Pehuén talks about how targeting the brain’s response instead could make these devices more reliable, adaptive, and eventually closed-loop. #BionicVision #NeuroTech #BCI

8/ So what have we learned? It’s that more spatial information isn’t always better guidance. When navigation gets hard, reducing the translation from information to action can matter more than giving people a richer representation. Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2603.17238

Actionable Guidance Outperforms Map and Compass Cues in Demanding Immersive VR Wayfinding
Navigation aids are central to immersive virtual reality (VR) experiences that involve physical locomotion. Their effectiveness depends not only on how much spatial information they provide, but also ...

7/ My favorite result: the arrow reduced the gap between strong and weak navigators. It's an exploratory analysis, but the pattern is pretty clear: the people who struggled most with navigation benefited most from actionable guidance.

6/ Better guidance also didn’t come at the cost of ignoring the world. Participants still noticed incidental objects in the environment, while reporting lower workload and stress with the arrow than with the compass.

5/ People also spent the least time looking at the arrow. The minimap needed more inspection; the compass the most. More time looking at the interface was also associated with higher workload and stress.
Aggregated gaze heatmaps for the 3 aids and unguided condition. Fixations concentrate near the interface elements for Compass and Minimap, whereas gaze is more broadly distributed across the scene

4/ The arrow performed best. Navigation was more accurate and faster with the arrow, then the minimap, then the compass.

3/ The arrow gave a direct egocentric cue, but could point through a wall (toward the goal), so you still had to solve the local route yourself. The compass gave a bearing, whereas the minimap gave the most spatial information, but you had to turn that into an egocentric movement decision.

2/ We asked how different kinds of guidance help when navigation gets hard. 42 people navigated a physical VR maze with fog, time pressure, distractions, and routes that could suddenly be blocked. We compared an arrow, minimap, and compass.

Ecological Visual Processing in the Mouse
Visual systems evolved to extract behaviorally relevant information while animals move through and interact with their world. Such ecological vision differs fundamentally from standard laboratory paradigms in many key aspects, making this a much harder problem for the brain to solve, and for the neuroscientist to study. However, emerging technologies and experimental approaches have enabled investigation of visual computations under these ecological conditions. These approaches are particularly powerful in the mouse, combining well-developed genetic tools, high-throughput recordings, and quantifiable ethological tasks. Here we review computations that are engaged in ecological contexts, including active sensing, motion processing, scene analysis, distance estimation, and spatial perception. We delineate experimental approaches that engage these computations and synthesize current understanding of their neural implementations based on mouse research. These studies reveal how ecological vision engages distinct processing strategies and novel neural circuitry, while highlighting the vast territory that remains unexplored in understanding real-world visual computation.

We introduce BIRD: Behavior Induction via Representation-structure Distillation. Instead of transferring outputs, BIRD aligns the geometry of internal representations between teacher and student, enabling weak → strong generalization. #KnowledgeDistillation #TransferLearning #Robustness
Two-panel schematic illustrating the BIRD framework. Left panel shows independent pre-training of a teacher and a student network on different datasets, each optimized with its own task loss. Right panel shows representation-structure distillation: selected intermediate layers from teacher and student are compared via a representation loss, which aligns the geometry of their internal activations while the student is still trained on its own task loss. A snowflake icon indicates the teacher is frozen. The diagram emphasizes that behavior is transferred by aligning internal representation structure rather than outputs or shared data.
