At the proposed DC01UK site in South Mimms, the developers recorded a barn owl nest in an oak tree, complete with pellets and feathers. It appears on one survey sheet from 4 Sept 2024, but doesn't appear again. No barn owl survey was conducted, and Hertsmere Council gave outline permission in 2025.

But they will in Iver, near Heathrow. Link Park AI data centre will border Fray Island/Mabey's Meadow, one of London's best kingfisher habitats. The developer's own ecologist flagged up risk around pollution and construction dust but dismissed them as "insignificant". We think it's very significant.

Gillian May formed Dorchester Duck Patrol earlier this year after numerous attacks on wildlife on the River Frome. So now the community is fighting back, protecting birds from catapult crimes. But this caring community shouldn’t have to patrol the river to make sure birds are safe.

Earlier this month, a teenager appeared in court after a catapult was being used to fire at animals in the Fordingbridge area. He pleaded guilty to possessing an article capable of being used to commit a summary offence under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981.

ZOOM I’m sitting out in my backyard, where hummingbirds are always zipping past—sometimes so close they flash right by my eyes. This shot was pure luck: a ruby‑throated hummingbird caught in mid‑zoom as it streaked across the yard.

218 hectares of Havering grassland is set to be torn up for 340,000m² of data centre sheds. That land is home to badgers, water voles, bats, hares, great crested newts, hedgehogs, skylarks and more. The developer said its own 'compensation habitat' won't even reach "moderate" condition for 15 years.
