A large basaltic mini-island just off the coast of Cape Meares sits in the Pacific Ocean on the northern Oregon coast. It’s dark with seaweed and probably mussels along the water’s edge, and then streaked with gray, brownish green and white going up the sides. On the rugged, domed top, hundreds of sea birds like cormorants tend their nests. You can even hear their calls above the wind. Dark green Sitka spruce boughs poke out from the right and left sides of the picture from where I’m taking the shot on the mainland. The ambient light is cloudy.

At a tiny shop in the maze that is Seoul’s, South Korea, two guys were selling a type of candy that only used to be for the royal family. The guy on the right demonstrates making it with a ball of cold honey - cold enough to be firm, but pliable, and not sticky when dipped in rice flour over and over again. He was able to stretch it and pull it until it was a bundle of very thin threads. My Korean friends wouldn’t let me buy it, and I felt kind of guilty not buying it when I had taken the picture. He was quite the showman, but his friend just looked at me.

A tiny striped shore crab, about 3 centimeters across, is jammed into a crack in the basaltic rocks on the ocean side of Proposal Rock on the beach at Neskowin State Park along the Oregon Coast. Its eyes are black, its claw tips are kind of lavender, but turn a mottled spring green and maroon as they go up to the rest of its body, which is also those colors. A couple of cream-colored barnacles are attached to the rock on either side, as well as some very tiny baby barnacles growing on the “roof” of this rock crevice.

The partially blue and cloudy sky is reflected in the glassy waters of the Snake River at Farewell Bend State Park in far eastern Oregon. Green foliage covers the near bank, and is partially shaded by the patchy clouds above. Dry, tan-brown mountains beyond the opposite bank are also reflected. A stunning sunset stretches out over the black, silhouetted lava hills of Craters of the Moon, Idaho. Swathes of honey gold, salmon pink, lavender-gray, pale gray, light blue, and darker blue are painted across the sky just after the sun sank below the hills. In fact, this is looking the same way as the viewpoint I shared with the milky way galaxy a couple of days ago, as this is a dark sky region.

This is a 3-centimeter section of a small stick that fell out of a tree during the last rainy spell. The tip is covered in pale sea-green shield lichen with tiny sprigs of oakmoss sticking out at different angles. A bright yellow pop of sunburst lichen with its disc-shaped growths sits in the middle of it all.

A high desert scene from remote eastern Idaho. In the foreground, there’s some short, scrubby, dry weeds the color of dusty rose. Behind that, there’s a layer of bright golden yellow grass, and then, as the altitude rises, the hills beyond turn a kind of golden brown (like lion fur). The mountains behind that have rocky layers of dark grayish brown and just gray, getting darker under a thunderstormy sky as they go to the last visible layer of mountains.

Golden hour along a forest path heading west through a dense stand of Sitka spruce, Douglas fir, and many other species of trees living along the Oregon coast. Trees cast long shadows on the reddish-brown path in the bright, golden, late afternoon sunshine. The dappled sun illuminates the green boughs and dense green undergrowth and moss. A dense fog above the Pacific Ocean lifts just enough for the viewer to see a black basaltic headland and several sharp, black, chunky sea stacks jutting out into the sea, indicating that the headland used to be longer, but the waves have had their way with the rest of it over the centuries. A white, branched red alder tree limb covered in various types of lichen and moss. The branch goes diagonally from the lower right corner and splits into 3 in the middle going up to the left. It looks to me like a dragon with its mouth open because there’s a knot in the wood with pale, sea green shield lichen going around it that looks like an eye. On top of its “head” and “neck” there is plenty of shaggy, pale, sea green bears lichen and some dark green moss poofing up to make a crest or maybe fins, if we’re thinking it’s a sea dragon, which would be appropriate, since this tree is near the coast in Tillamook County, Oregon. The background is blurred, dark green foliage from the surrounding trees.

A macro shot of a yellowing leaf fallen into a slow stream on a cloudy day, so the only color is really on the leaf, and the water looks black and white from the cloud cover and the reflection of trees overhead. A black water skipper insect perches on the lower right side of the leaf and has just killed its legs out, making a smooth, but uneven, undulating pattern on the water’s glassy surface.

A veritable sea of black-eyed Susan flowers (small sunflowers). Bright, sunflower yellow with dark brown (nearly black) centers. One in the front center right is closer to the camera, and sticks out clearly while the sea of flowers behind it is blurred out, but obvious nonetheless.
