One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.

I was at a beloved event last night that is spiritually if not literally a mask-mandatory lesbian bar in western MA and folks were a little on edge knowing that we were the subject of intense hostile national news scrutiny.

Speed Racer (2008) should have won every Oscar and had yearly increasingly unhinged sequels. The Wachowski sisters invented new colours just to make a silly racing movie.

The LNG corporations we subsidize are running off with billions. The BC NDP promised to fix our gas royalty system by capturing 50% of the industry’s profits, but after being lobbied 192 times in a year, we’re only going to see ~11%. Join the BC Greens. We work for you, not corporations.

B.C. hinges its economic future on a massive natural gas boom, but experts warn a critical budget oversight and concessions to industry risk wiping out billions in expected public revenues

I was a prodigious reader and first read the Hobbit when I was about 5, and it was definitely difficult for me to get my head around and I didn't follow everything! This made my constant rereads through the rest of my childhood more satisfying as my understanding grew.

1/ Cuba is out of fuel, strangled by the US fuel chokehold. People are dying, systems are breaking down. This is collective punishment against a people who have done absolutely nothing except live their lives under hard conditions imposed by the US blockade for decades.

The bail conversation in Canada is incredibly dysfunctional. Inflammatory and inaccurate rhetoric about accused people on release is a hobby shared by politicians across the ideological spectrum. It's ludicrous to suggest that we need to detain more people before trial.

I'm very alert to my parents' (mid 70s, highly-educated hard-left hippies but a bit calcified in their beliefs and sometimes uncritical about what they consume) media diet, but am comforted that their starting points for American politics are HCR and Colbert, who provide a solid, reliable baseline.

The hysteria the last couple years around diversion of safe supply never made sense in terms of raw numbers but it's still deeply upsetting to find that the government knew it was nonsense and caved anyways. A _lot_ of people are dead because this administration is unserious about drug policy.

When BC's consumer carbon tax was first introduced, it was accompanied by tax cuts to both personal and corporate taxes to make it revenue-neutral. But when it was eliminated last spring, these tax cuts were not reversed. The result is a $2 billion hole in BC's finances. #BCBudget

Deeply embarrassing how this Bob The Angry Flower comic from 1999 continues to accurately call out AI journalism. angryflower.com/251.html
An ink drawn black and white comic from 1999 in which an anthropomorphic talking flower attempts unsuccessfully to interrogate a shovel, cardboard box, alarm clock and vacuum cleaner. None of them crack and he concludes (probably correctly) that they are smarter than him.

THOUSANDS

Out of the thousands
who are known,
or who want to be known
as poets,
maybe one or two
are genuine
and the rest are fakes,
hanging around the sacred
precincts
trying to look like the real thing.
Needless to say
I am one of the fakes,
and this is my story
