Young people, especially autistic young people, rely on social media for socialisation because offline spaces are not accessible to them. Without also creating accessible, youth-friendly spaces in the local community, social media bans will just leave kids with nowhere to go.

The VC after telling 2600+ members of staff that they're at risk of redundancy: I think this is a really exciting time with huge opportunities for the academic sector, actually. There's nothing exciting about cutting this many jobs. What a vile, sociopathic thing to say
Final three paragraphs of the 12 May Times Higher Education article where VC Jane Norman defends the job cuts. The text in the image is:
"Overall, Norman believes that the changes are “exciting” and will future-proof the university through a transition period in UK higher education. While she stressed that she did not want to “minimise the adverse impact on staff”, she said the moment represents “huge opportunities” for the university.

“I think it’s a really interesting time in higher education…The world is changing, geopolitics is changing, and what students want is really changing. I think the universities that will survive and thrive are ones like ours that are taking a very proactive view of the environment, and thinking carefully about how they want to not just survive for the next couple of years, but to thrive in 10, 20, 30 years for the future.

“So actually it’s an exciting time for higher education, because I think there’s a real opportunity to shape our response and still stick with our core strengths of excellent research and excellent teaching, but make sure we do it in a way that’s modern, effective and fit for the future.”"

On my way to Brussels for the Sociolinguistics Circle, where I'll present data from my PhD outside of my department for the first time tomorrow! 🤩 And then a short visit home. Looking forward to seeing friends and colleagues and hearing Dutch spoken around me for a few days

I’m travelling to Manchester for #LavLang31 today, to present a paper that is strikingly relevant right now. In two months, there are national elections in the Netherlands. On Thursday, I present my study on the representation of trans rights in the previous elections. A short teaser:
