An overdue personal update: I'm excited to say that I'm officially a dual American/Canadian citizen!
Me holding my Canadian passport outdoors against a blue sky. The dark navy cover has gold embossed text reading "CANADA / PASSPORT / PASSEPORT," a gold maple leaf outline, and the Canadian coat of arms.

Hey everyone! I wanted to share that Dr. Kaki Ryan and I have put together a systems research reading group for UNC computer science majors — or really, anyone who just thinks computers are neat. Meetings are Mondays at 4 PM in FB141. Great turnout so far, but we’d love to have more people join us!

This is inaccurate. There is no known vulnerability with Signal's core tech. The memo was discussing phishing attempts, which Signal has worked to mitigate. And it was hastily reported. It's important not to spread misinfo that can confuse people into moving away from meaningfully private comms.

I'm seeing a lot of misinformation re:Hegseth and @signal.org, and I think a lot of it needs to be put to rest. Signal is, and remains, secure if your opsec isn't abysmal. The weakest link in any security system is generally the person using it. That's what this is.

I've mostly agreed with people that say that Google Tensor is plenty powerful for most, but it really does have its moments where the cracks show. Android Auto, Tidal, and an 8 GB file download are making my Pixel 9 CHUG. Really hoping Google moving to TSMC and non-Exynos cores fixes this.

It is perfectly legal to know your rights and to educate others about them, too. EVERYONE in the United States, citizen or not, has rights. I will not allow this administration to intimidate us from helping you know about them. Here’s our shareable guide ⬇️: (pt. 1/2)
KNOW YOUR
RIGHTS
IN CASE OF ICE:
CONOCE TUS DERECHOS
EN CASO DE ENCUENTRO CON ICE:DO NOT OPEN YOUR DOOR.
ICE cannot enter your home without a warrant signed by a judge.
Tell the agents to show you the warrant by sliding it under the door.
NO ABRAS TU PUERTA.
ICE no puede entrar a tu casa sin una orden firmada por un juez. Diles a los agentes que te muestren la orden deslizándola debajo de la puerta.ASK THEM
TO LEAVE.
If ICE doesn't have a warrant, tell them you do not consent for them to enter your home and ask them to leave. At work, ICE cannot enter employee-only areas without permission.
2
You have the right to remain silent.
If the agents ask you questions, tell them,
"I wish to remain silent."
PERMANECE EN SILENCIO.
Tienes derecho a permanecer en silencio.
Si los agentes te hacen preguntas, diles:
"Deseo permanecer en silencio".

I'm getting really tired of people referring to AI models like Llama, Mistral, DeepSeek, etc. as open source. You're looking for "open weights". Open sourcing would mean providing training data too, which is largely stolen. The companies that make them would be publishing evidence of crimes.

“Torrenting from a corporate laptop doesn’t feel right”: Meta emails unsealedA photo of Aaron Swartz (1986-2013) when he was 19.
Last month, Meta admitted to torrenting a controversial large dataset known as LibGen, which includes tens of millions of pirated books. But details around the torrenting were murky until yesterday, when Meta's unredacted emails were made public for the first time. The new evidence showed that Meta torrented "at least 81.7 terabytes of data across multiple shadow libraries through the site Anna’s Archive, including at least 35.7 terabytes of data from Z-Library and LibGen," the authors' court filing said. And "Meta also previously torrented 80.6 terabytes of data from LibGen."

If they’re forced to make their search index licensable, I see them losing a *lot* of users to the alternatives that will benefit from it. AI isn’t nearly the value add that they think it is, and people are getting fatigue from having it shoved where it isn’t necessary. Bring 2020 search back.
