I spent the morning reading John Levi Martin's absolutely brutal takedown of the Vanderbilt report's assessment of politicization in sociology. I recommend it and hope it gets as much attention as the initial (crap) Vanderbilt report. A Reader’s Guide to the Rubin Report osf.io/preprints/so...

M. Gessen has written a truly extraordinary piece about the "soft fascism" faced by transgender people in America, and by trans people in Kansas particularly. Beautifully written and reported, deeply humane. I really hope you'll read it. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/13/o...

Today, @gabrielwinant.bsky.social explains why a clear picture of how age mediates class would reveal not gerontocracy, but capitalism and the fractionated class system it produces.

As Sam Moyn has recently argued, "class reductionism" fails to explain differentiation along the generational gradient — a pattern clearly visible in economics, politics, and ideology.

It's good that universities are making six-figure payouts to people who got fired for their comments about Charlie Kirk, but now the universities need to do some new firing, of administrators who carried out those illegal actions. www.nytimes.com/2026/05/27/u...

The president of Cornell hit two students with his car, lied about what happened, and got away with it. The story illustrates an under-reported crisis in higher education: administrators and the trustees they answer to are increasingly hostile to the idea of college itself. I wrote about it here:

One funny thing is that a role science plays in Moby Dick is deflating the idea that MD has a specific hatred for Ahab. The more we learn about Sperm Whales the more possible it is that not only does Moby Dick hate Ahab but also, when around other whales, absolutely will not shut up about it.

It’s the anniversary of the Hedged Out audiobook. It explains the close-knit patrimonial ties that organize Wall Street and beyond, making the Epstein criminal rings possible. Check it out through your library on Libby or 70% off here: www.audiobooks.com/promotions/p...

70% OFF Hedged Out: Inequality and Insecurity on Wall Street
Who do you think of when you imagine a hedge fund manager? A greedy fraudster, a visionary entrepreneur, a wolf of Wall Street? These tropes capture the public imagination of a successful hedge fund manager. But behind the designer suits, helicopter commutes, and illicit pursuits are the everyday stories of people who work in the hedge fund industry—many of whom don't realize they fall within the 1 percent that drives the divide between the richest and the rest. With Hedged Out, former hedge fund analyst Megan Tobias Neely gives listeners an outsider's insider perspective on Wall Street and its enduring culture of inequality. Hedged Out dives into the upper echelons of Wall Street, where elite white masculinity is the standard measure for the capacity to manage risk and insecurity. Facing an unpredictable and risky stock market, hedge fund workers protect their interests by working long hours and building tight-knit networks with people who look and behave like them. Using ethnographic vignettes and her own industry experience, Neely showcases the voices of managers and other workers to illustrate how this industry of politically mobilized elites excludes people on the basis of race, class, and gender. Neely shows how this system of elite power and privilege not only sustains itself but builds over time as the beneficiaries concentrate their resources.

Our political discourse pits identity politics against economic populism. But the choice is false and contributes to incredible confusion about the working class across the political spectrum. For @hammerandhope.bsky.social I show why and sketch an alternative (sorry to crosspost):

Just a wild mischaracterizarion of the argument too. Our basic point is that class formation is not a y/n question, which is what the book presupposes even if it argues that class consciousness isn’t “automatic.”
