this week I was able to fix a problem (caused by a mistake of my own), and today I received a very kind email from the author expressing his thanks and complimenting me on the overall experience of working together. feels like I should stop now and end the week on a high note

phew. you can guess where this novel is going within the first few pages, but it still packs a punch.

Please consider taking 2 minutes to send an email to your congressional reps about a new US Customs policy blocking imported Rxs that will take effect on Oct. 22. I take a medication that makes life with Meniere's disease manageable; I buy it from Canada because in the US the price is exorbitant.

not good for my chronic epistemological anxiety
screenshot of Merriam-Webster's online entry for the word "apparent." Red arrows point to the following two definitions:
2. "clear or manifest to the understanding"
4. "manifest to the sense or mind as real or true on the basis of evidence that may or may not be factually valid"

today’s rabbit hole: creating an invoice template (now that I no longer use project software that creates invoices for my freelance work) if you think this sounds like a simple task, you’re right. you also probably don’t suffer from analysis paralysis

the verb “read” should have a past tense that is spelled differently. I propose “redt,” still pronounced as we do now. I read whenever I get the chance. I redt 40 pages last night.

I’ll add, part of what’s at play is the breadth of editorial work and the various kinds of jobs bearing the title “editor.” by the time a book goes to print, its text has met the eyes of at least 3 different types of editors, often more.

authors, y'all know that production/project editors do not read your manuscripts line by line, right? I mention this in a spirit of sincerity. I wouldn't expect an author to have this knowledge unless they were already very familiar with the publishing process.

topic, scope, and broad structure while also putting mechanical elements of the book and its parts (images and captions, chapter structure, section headings, the author's approach to punctuation, etc.) under a microscope, as needed.

unless a project editor (PE) also *happens* to act as the copyeditor for a manuscript (which is pretty rare these days; most CEing happens out-of-house), it's not their job to be aware of the book's content on a paragraph-by-paragraph basis. the PE needs to have a bird's-eye view of the book's—

just finished Save a Seat for Me, by @markanthonyneal.bsky.social. it’s variously poignant, funny, and disarmingly frank. while it’s very much a book about Black fatherhood and Black family in the US, it contains many insights into the relationships and generational dynamics that define any family.
the first hardcover edition of Save a Seat for Me, sitting on a dark wooden surface. the cover is a bright yellow, with a small line drawing of two chairs facing each other.

so far I’ve read _Jack of Spades_ and _Pursuit_, both of which are well-written but grim to the point of being almost unpleasant to read. and if *I* think a book is too grim…hoo boy, that’s a downer of a book! might have to shift over and read one of her “literary fiction” novels
