This is the kind of event that makes me excited to tour "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood." Met poet Mary Lindsay (Peewee) at the Oxford, NC public library. She recalled meeting Langston Hughes in 1954, when he read her poems for 20 to 30 minutes. Out Sept 29. Grab your copy, link in comments

Nina Simone had a roommate in the early 1980s: Mary Burnette, dead center in her graduating class photo. A year older than Nina, they traveled together during that stretch. Details like this are part of what this book tries to capture. Out Sept 29. Grab your copy, link in comments. #NinaSimone

From my research fellowship at the National Humanities Center, Durham, NC, 2022-23. That scroll is my "voodoo map," connecting Hughes and Simone, basically what this book grew out of. Grateful for the support that made it possible. Out Sept 29. Pre-Order ink in Comments. #NinaSimone

Poets don't usually end up in liquor ads. Langston Hughes did. October 1959, Ebony magazine, an ad campaign for Smirnoff vodka, not long after "A Raisin in the Sun" opened, its title drawn from his poem "Harlem." Out Sept 29. #LangstonHughes

A hand-drawn map by Langston Hughes, tracking his walk to catch Charles Mingus at the 1960 Newport Jazz Festival. Nina Simone ended up there too, playing an impromptu midnight set with Little Richard so packed police surrounded the building. Out Sept 29. #NinaSimone #LangstonHughes

East 127th Street, Harlem. Langston Hughes lived here from 1947 until his death in 1967. The connection between this house and Nina Simone is one of the great untold stories of the civil rights era. That's what this book is about. Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood. Out this fall.

A story I love from Feb 1949. Langston Hughes came to Winston Salem to read his new book. The venue sat a hundred, five hundred showed up. He read four times over so nobody left without hearing him. Days later, he met Nina Simone for the first time. Out Sept 15. #LangstonHughes #NinaSimone

Before "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," there was this—touring with 𝘖𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮. Every packed room and community discussion was an essential part of the long trek that led me here. That's where the hunt for this hidden history caught fire. Out Sept 15. 📖

Ithaca, NY, 2017—with the wonderful Dorothy Cotton. A reminder of how this book came to life. Writing it wasn't just about reading archival files. It was about sitting with civil rights giants like Dorothy and listening to their stories. That's where the soul of this book was born. Out Sept 15. 📖

1/ Two years ago, I mentioned to a bookstore crowd that Langston Hughes wrote liner notes for Nina Simone. That collective gasp told me I'd found my next book. Sometimes the best stories hide in plain sight. "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" — out this fall. 🧵👇 #Booksky #HistorySky #Histodons
