An unseasonably warm but otherwise lovely evening in the beautiful metropolis of Chicago, Illinois.
A photograph of cars on the street on Worth Avenue in Chicago with brick buildings on each side and behind them a lightly cloudy sky with a hint of sunset at the end of it.

If dealings between me and my brother are any indication he’ll still be (playfully) rubbing it in his face decades later. Little brother victories are hard fought and rightly cherished.

No matter how much money you throw at elections there are a finite amount of highly competent, or even functionally competent, political operatives in any party. When you’re fighting for states that historically have not been competitive it becomes an issue of labor and opportunity cost.

I have seen no evidence, for instance, that he ever voiced a strong objection to Philadelphia police bombing an apartment building in 1985 or any other case of state violence where the deceased wasn’t a straight white “Christian.” I think it’s foolish to assume that’s by coincidence.

There is so much overlap. I cover extremism in America, as part of my work. There are people who are legitimately just anti-government, but plenty more who know what terms to avoid to not appear bigoted on the record. I think it’s naive to portray McVeigh as simply opposed to state violence.

The misharacterization of McVeigh as some frustrated loner, devoid of a specific political ideology, is fundamental to how we got to where we are today. He was selling the Turner Diaries to people at gun shows. His politics were clear.

It's World Homeless Day, and I'll just say: Homelessness isn't some great unsolvable mystery. People are homeless because they don't have homes. This suffering persists not for lack of solutions, but because enormous wealth and power are invested in maintaining the very structures that produce it.

last night eyewitnesses saw Oscar Belgal — the man shot by ICE with his 5 year old in the car — discharged from the hospital into ICE custody, with feds speeding off as NYPD cleared the roads for them of protesters. his attorneys don't know where he is; he's seemingly been taken out of NY state.

Went to pick up some books and ran into this band playing in Logan Square for about twenty people. They’re called Slow Pulp and I’m a new fan. From the small amount I’ve heard they’re like a mix between Mazzy Star, Morphine, and Phoenix.

I also think this is much easier (and far less risky) if you’re highly confident in the benevolence of the goal. It’d be nice to see someone say “we are giving you healthcare. We don’t care what you think about that. Cancer won’t bankrupt people now.” Start at the necessities and just do it.

Pretty clear to me there’s a very good case against this man for mass murder, and I’m saying that in as measured a fashion as I can. He’s order the killing of 234 people under no plausible war or legal justification. I am skeptical he will ever face legal accountability for til his but he should.

There’s a chance I’d support the death penalty if the criminal justice system didn’t routinely get things so wrong. When you study criminal law you find cases where it seems absolutely called for but so many more where they let a person out 30 years later, having definitively proven them innocent.

The article states that the breach affected 2.8 million living people and there are 1.3 million people currently serving. So, unless I’m misunderstanding this, it seems the hackers obtained records on most of, if not the entire, U.S. military.

I learned from the Jesuits that formal education should be a humbling experience, bc when you’re young you think you know about a thing and then you meet a guy who tells you that he’s been studying that thing for 45 years, gave up most worldly pleasures to read about it more.

This seems like a pretty big deal: donors made illegal contributions to Susan Collins and then were awarded lucrative contracts after her office intervened with the Navy. An FBI investigation was dropped under Trump. www.propublica.org/article/fbi-...
To skirt campaign finance laws and conceal the source of the funds, Navatek planned to funnel the donation through a shell company. The CEO wanted assurance that Collins would know where
the money came from. Reed confirmed that she would, the executive said - and that Navatek would get its government contracts.
After the Corner Bakery meeting, Navatek's CEO, Martin Kao, sent an initial $150,000 to the Collins super PAC using the shell company. Two months later, he told Navatek executives that Collins committed to getting the company $32 million in naval contracts, according to an internal company email reviewed by ProPublica.

It’s people - not AI systems - who are choosing to murder civilians with small drones at ever escalating rates around the world, as I recently wrote about with Yale’s Nathaniel Raymond for @foreignpolicy.com:

Civilians Need Better Protections in the Drone Age
Hunting noncombatants from the sky is growing disturbingly common.
