In two years we've gone from a standard where the President's budget proposal was a set of suggestions Congress would ignore to where Congressional appropriations are now a set of suggestions the President ignores.

This is quite cool. My university is the first organisation in the world to force Microsoft to allow us to turn off copilot summaries in Word 365, after a backlash against it from staff (including, very vocally, me). That cannot have been easy for our heroic IT people so hats very much off to them!

In broad terms, reform ideas in the US break down into anti-party (or party weakening) and pro-party (i.e. multi-party). Anti-party reforms have superficial appeal but frankly don't work. Pro-party reforms aim to produce more coherent and more legible choices on the ballot, which is what does work.

The US built the greatest talent magnet ever, attracting the smart, skilled, and striving. They’d come to study, then stay and build things here, or leave with positive impressions and fruitful connections. Helped make the US wealthy and powerful. Then America chose to throw it away. And for what?

If Other Jobs Were Like US Senator www.theatlantic.com/newsletters/...
It's time for your scheduled open-heart surgery. Unfortunately, no one has seen or heard from the surgeon in weeks, since the Incident. The nurse says that she spoke with him at length on a wide variety of important subjects and that he had never been more eloquent. "Will he be along shortly?" you ask.
"I hired him to perform a specific job, and I would like him to do that." The nurse is appalled by this disrespect for the doctors privacy. You lie there for several weeks, your chest flaps held open by clamps.

the thing that’s been painfully obvious for years is that unchecked capital accumulation paired with gutting the social safety net and public goods was going to lead to commerce without customers. an economy built on consumption when no one has money to consume.

One reason FDR's court-packing plan failed to catch on is that the Supreme Court was perceived by many Americans as apolitical and therefore a victim of unwarranted aggression from the president. This court, however, is nakedly partisan. And any Democrat in power should be saying so early and often

One thing I’ve learned in my years in higher ed is that depts established for the express purpose of promoting rightwing thought will always go over budget on alcohol, and when all of the other depts find out about it the response is, “we’re allowed to spend university money on alcohol?”
