The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

I grew up in Wantage, where there's a statue of King Alfred in the middle of the marketplace. Traffic cones on its head were commonplace. To the point pretty much everyone at my secondary school doodled one on its head on the front of their homework diary. It remains a fun harmless prank

Agree whole-heartedly. The UK government should have done it when that whole business about using Grok to generate explicit images of female users blew up. And there should be a minimum acceptable standard for blocking and other moderation functionality because X is clearly horribly deficient

Matthew Daly @matthewdaly.co.uk · 19/09/2026
I think the Dutch government had the right idea. They run their own Mastodon server, so they have full control over who can post or message them on that server, can block other servers and retain full moderation control for their own server. If necessary, they can cross-post to other services.

Matthew Daly @matthewdaly.co.uk · 19/09/2026
IMHO X should now probably be referred to in the same sort of terms as Gab and Parler. And particularly given the whole business of them failing to act against images generated with Grok

Joyce Carole Oates on Musk 🔗 lithub.com/elon-musk-ge...
So curious that such a wealthy man never posts anything that indicates that he enjoys or is even aware of what virtually everyone appreciates— scenes from nature, pet dog or cat, praise for a movie, music, a book (but doubt that he reads); pride in a friend's or relative's accomplishment; condolences for someone who has died; pleasure in sports, acclaim for a favorite team; references to history.
In fact he seems totally uneducated, uncultured.

Just reading through Reform UK's constitution. A motion of no confidence in the Party Leader can only be called if "50% of all Members in Good Standing write to the Chairman requesting" it. 50% of 280,000-odd members writing to the Chairman is an *extraordinarily* high bar. Basically impossible.
No confidence motions
6.28.A motion of no confidence in the Party Leader may be proposed in two ways:
6.28.1. by 50 Members of the Parliamentary Party or 50% of the Members of the
Parliamentary Party (whichever is greater), writing to the Chairman and requesting a
motion of no confidence. For the avoidance of doubt, clause 6.28.1 is only applicable
in the event that the Parliamentary Party consists of more than 100 MPs; or
6.28.2. by 50% of all Members in Good Standing writing to the Chairman requesting a
motion of no confidence.
In either case such a request shall only be valid for 60 days from the day of receipt, after
that time the Chairman shall disregard such requests.
