Here's the thing: there are pretty frequent plague outbreaks. Almost all modern cases occur in Africa, We know how to stop transmission. We know how to treat individual patients (in the case of pneumonic plague you want to give IV antibiotics early. 🧵

It does seem like available information is pointing, instead, at this potentially being a case of pneumonic plague. That's what happens when y. pestis is inhaled and gets to the lungs. Pneumonic plague can spread from person to person. 🧵

What we commonly call 'the plague' is a disease caused by the bacteria yersinia pestis. "Bubonic plague" is what happens with y. pestis, usually transmitted by the bite of an infected flea, enters the body and causes painful swelling of lymph nodes. See, e.g., the Black Death 🧵

I've been going through publicly available information relative to the possible Y. pestis (pneumonic plague) incident in Russia. Reports are conflicting—we do not have a clear picture of what's happening. And even under the best of circumstances the Russian government isn't exactly transparent 🧵

The Vatican does have its own LLM model, trained on data from its own archives. (This is not a secret, Robert Ballecer SJ has talked about it publicly)

CVS has a dominant market share here after Rite Aid failed, and my prescription is in a multi-year shortage - I do not know how someone who doesn’t have a job that lets them answer their phone at arbitrary times ever refills it. But vaccines were easy. Lots of appts online, visit took 20 min.
CVS answers the phone with an LLM now. You can't talk to a person, no matter how long you wait on your initial call. You're gonna be told you have to leave a message that gets poorly transcribed often by an LLM, and then at some random time unknown to you, in the future, a pharmacy tech will call you back.
Doesn't matter if because of a disability or chronic illness or what have you, your childcare responsibilities, elder care responsibilities. It doesn't matter if you're not available when they call back. You better be, because they're not calling back again. We're watching the healthcare pharmacy system fall apart even further around us, even though we rely on it in order to survive.
But, but, but, but, but, but CVS still carries vaccines. CVS still carries vaccines. So too does Walgreens.

Nicole is a leading expert on the issue of campus sexual violence. I am floored that USA Today would do this to her. I find this kind of journalistic behavior unethical and morally reprehensible, twisting an interview with a renowned advocate for survivors into a hit piece against a survivor.

fantastic (not the side effects, they do suck. if i may be so presumptuous - some folks find moving their arms around, lifting something of moderate weight, can help with local soreness)

Federal agencies have spent years addressing gaps in data about people with intellectual & developmental disabilities (I/DD). Now, the proposed 2028 NHIS redesign could remove measures developed to help close those gaps. #DisabilityData #NHIS
CRDJ Public Comment Letter graphic over a blue-toned image of a person viewed from behind against an abstract data-like background. Due October 19, 2026. Title: “RE: NHIS Proposed 2028 Redesign.” Text explains that the proposed National Health Interview Survey redesign could undo progress in identifying people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, weakening federal evidence used to document disparities, evaluate policy, and hold systems accountable.Black-and-white CRDJ recommendations graphic for the NHIS Proposed 2028 Redesign, due October 19, 2026. Four concerns are listed: reverses recent I/DD data progress; weakens disability evidence infrastructure; compounds inequities in who gets counted; and moves forward without enough testing or transparency. "Medicaid work requirements" are above water with the American electorate (net +18). Calling the same policy "Medicaid eligibility cuts" meaningfully decreases support (net -11). I do not understand the insistence on adopting the framing of those trying to destroy Medicaid
Bar chart of polling data from Data For Progress.
Title: Voters Support the Same Medicaid Rules When Called "Work Requirements" and Oppose Them When Called "Eligibility Cuts".
Description: Under new rules, some adults can get or keep Medicaid only if the state confirms that they meet work, school, or volunteer rules. [Split A n=613] Do you support or oppose these Medicaid work requirements? [Split B n=598] Do you support or oppose these Medicaid eligibility cuts?

My daughter is finally old enough for the adult COVID vax, so she & I are getting flu & COVID 💉 at Costco Rx tomorrow. Son got his flu shot last week. I’d been waiting for kids COVID 💉 to come in but our state still doesn’t have it. So I scheduled what I could for now & 🤞 Feds/state get it out.

One of the biggest stories of 2027 will be the savagery of the GOP's Medicaid cuts. But the most indefensible cruelty has already begun, with disabled kids being ripped from their homes and sent to asylums, @matthewcort.land told me.

People who have not experienced it are often not aware of just how vicious hiring processes are to the disabled. "When do I tell them about my disability?" is an agonizing tactical conversation my partner and I have had too many times. Hirers will absolutely use it to disqualify people summarily.

I mean if you've never been the person who needs a drink, you might say "who the fuck cares" — the answer is often "the people hiring who determine your ability to pay the fucking rent"

(If you don't know, @kairyssdal.bsky.social flew planes off of a carrier for the U.S. Navy, (landed back on that carrier too). I would've thought a more considerate approach to disability - given the prevalence of disabled vets - woulda been a thing he did)
