Ireland's chronic over-dependence on HGVs for freight leaves us at mercy of every fuel crisis & cutting diesel prices is only a short-term salve. We need to shift to rail freight & electrify our HGV fleet, as I explain in @irishexaminer.bsky.social today. www.irishexaminer.com/opinion/comm...

Subsidies for diesel are lost money when electric trucks are the future
Pumping taxpayers' money into diesel-guzzling trucks is fair to nobody when we should be subsidising companies to transition to electric vehicles

Last month was the windiest September yet, with wind farms producing 1256GWh: equivalent to 36.8% of the island's electricity demand ☘️ 🍃 Significantly up from the same period last year, the upward trend for September wind continues 📈

Great analysis, and something many of us have been saying for a long time. Affordability and not rejection of EVs as a fuel source has been a huge factor in EV sales being taking until now to swing to where we are. Or another way, OEMs were making poor decisions about what consumers actually wanted

If I was doing this two years ago I would probably have been a lot more easily led towards A2W. But where we stand today this is the only approach I will accept now. It has to be so. And I will message; always good to have more info!

Matthew Sealy @matthew-sealy.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
A2W is a deep retrofit with pipework and radiators, or a more costly two-stage heat pump that is also not as well supported by installers. A2A is the only system that can *cool*. And that’s a large part, plus, A2A shouldn’t be more complex, if anything it should be the simpler and cheaper option

Matthew Sealy @matthew-sealy.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
Can you DM first, option is greyed out for me…

Matthew Sealy @matthew-sealy.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
It is!! But going by Daikin as an example the smallest 4x multi split is a 6.8kW unit, and the reason it might be an 8kW unit is the pipe length required for total piping length requirements. But again, that’s a bit where advice would go a long way!

Matthew Sealy @matthew-sealy.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
I didn’t either. I’m in the process of learning how it all works by myself at the minute! Doing it as BER assessor was saying about heat pump being correct to make an improvement to the home, so I’m trying to figure this out myself as well!

Matthew Sealy @matthew-sealy.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
Yes I’m in Limerick. And would the friend mind sharing installer contact details? I’m going to document all I’ve done and will do, so it’s recorded for others. I’ve data on energy usage in the house from 2019! And I never thought of Tipp Energy; that would be a good idea!

We’re end of terrace townhouse. 3 floors and 4 bedrooms and open plan sitting room/kitchen. Gas usage is ~7800kWh pa, I’m looking at 2x 8kW units (as they will be split front/rear), with 8x 2.5kW internal units (4x on each ext). I have to use 6kW units min as that’s what comes for multi-split units.

Matthew Sealy @matthew-sealy.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
Main help is, I have a good plan. My BER assessor has NEVER seen A2A is all his career. And it’s hard to find an installer who does A2A. So are there installers in Ireland that IHPA can help direct me towards, both advice, and works to be done…

DEAP is the SEAI’s tool for assessing home to issue their BER assessment. I now have access to the tool, so I can now run assessments on a home, I just can’t issue a cert 😂

And by ‘design’, I mean I’ve done the sums for how much energy I use per annum, what kWh of heating I need, how the rooms land and airflow etc. I will have 2x outside units, with 8x internal units then. @adrianhiel.bsky.social I think you might have some people I could prob speak to and get advice!?

Looking for some help/advice. I’ve designed my own heat pump system using Air-to-air, but for BER energy rating I need to input Dwelling Energy Assessment Procedure (DEAP). Anyone any advice on how to get this? And, anyone had #heatpump #A2A installed domestically in Ireland with recommendations?

Europe led major markets on EV sales in H1 2026, up 30% year on year. EVs are now 30%+ of EU sales, 38% in the UK. But the real story is global. Outside the major markets, sales rose ~75%. Latin America more than doubled. India +90%. Colombia +300%. The centre of gravity is shifting. Chart: IEA

Pity to hear of this, we did the kids only last month. Two renewals and two first time passports. Both were done before the scheduled time on the system. So surprised in the space of a month that it’s gone the other way now! Might be worth the email/chasing to see what they come back with!

This would be a perfect replacement for our Citroen van…. Price will be the main factor, aka is it actually in my price range 😅
000
Matthew Sealy @matthew-sealy.bsky.social · 09/08/2026
Current maths show my van of 30kWh/100km as being 72.3gCO2/km, car at 14.4kWh/100km as 34.7gCO2/km. They are approaching 1/3rd the *rated* CO2/km of their equivalent models. Which is most cases is higher and excludes Well-2-wheel. So even better overall, again!!

Another tipping point, electricity to from renewables above 50% in Ireland for the first half of the year! Meaning kms driving in an #EV are getting cleaner than before.

Less trims means faster production times. They should keep that. The current 5 seaters are the same size here, just a massive boot. I need the 7 seats as I have 4 kids and need the seats… our Citroen eSpacetourer is 9 seats, but battery is down to 38.3kWh useable at this point. It does 25kWh+/100km

Also, buy the orig Windblade like I did makes even more sense 😂 However I would like one of these, the space and overall range in one ‘tank’ plus charging speeds would be a nice update in time

Matthew Sealy @matthew-sealy.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
You could have aimed for the two hour window and done that 4 nights of the week either to make it ~€7 a week to fuel over that distance. I know it’s maybe less appealing on using a smaller % range of the battery, but it’ll save 50%+ if my maths aren’t wrong 🫣

Matthew Sealy @matthew-sealy.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
Anecdotally, supply is the issue for Kia. Exactly the same with their other models or brotheren at Hyundai with the Inster. They *could* sell a lot more! VW at that price point, not so much. But all the vans are at that point, which is poor for the consumer offering

It’s hard to know where the stats for IRL come from, but it’s doing very well, just not 60%+ well. It’s a ~€35k van excl VAT, an ID.Buzz is still ~€44k here excl VAT. So still a big walk between them. Even worse in passenger form (€45k vs €68k). Hence why I’m aiming for a 7 seat PV5 next year…

Don't look now, but the world has now installed 3TW of solar. Took 10 years to get from 100GW to 1TW. Less than 3 years to get to 2TW. Less than 2 years to get to 3TW. Analysts expect *9TW* by 2036.

It’s very strange how it hasn’t taken for the commercial space. I’m driving a passenger van myself, and the 80kph routes and town driving is absolutely perfect for it. Up-front costs are the hurdle there currently, and maybe some perception, but it just means we need to put some focus there

Thank you! I’m on my hols in West Cork, so had a bit of time to chill and write this up. And I was saying in the 30% increase without the ICE2EV, as you’ve probably seen it’s actually 56.84% without it. Which is fantastic to see that growth without the extra boost! Long may it continue as you say!

I said I’d be back with an article on this. July 2026 marks a significant month in the BEV (Battery Electric Vehicles) adoption in Ireland. EV sales are up 61.06% in 2026, making them the #1 fuel type, overtaking all other fuel types!

Matthew Sealy @matthew-sealy.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
June of 2023 my system produced 552kWh, came very close last month with 542kWh, so my 2nd highest monthly output. I still imported another 571.2kWh for running both EVs, but I’m happy none the less! A MWh month would be amazing though, I’d love to have that 😁 might use the neighbours roof…. 🤔
120
Matthew Sealy @matthew-sealy.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
I won’t spoil the results just yet, but the ICE2EV helped, but without it we would still of had a significant increase in July year on year, in the high 30%+ figures. The tide is turning. Article is in for review with the committee, should be published tomorrow is my current plan.

EV at the top! This is a swing in momentum to be at this point, it shows the consumer confidence is rapidly building in EVs favour as those long-term myths are being quashed by real world use
