A quick dash over to New Brighton and Leasowe this morning across high tide to see half a dozen distant Leach's Petrels and then one close in. Good to see Arctic and Great Skuas and @jkylesmith.bsky.social and Kev in the wild. #UKbirding #birds

Who knows what this Grey-headed Swamphen's origin story is, but nevertheless, certainly a charismatic bird in entertaining circumstances and at an intriguing location. So many questions! Worth the little detour off patch to Great Yarmouth docks. #NorfolkBirding

I get the impression there are gradually more and more media reports coming out of Gaza showing the devastation and inhumanity caused by Israel. They will not recover from this and history will treat western politicians and media who watched and did nothing with contempt.

Owl of the Day: Tawny Owl 📷 Ivan Sjögren
Owl perched in tree hollow, description from ebird: ‘A medium-sized owl with deep black eyes, strictly nocturnal and infrequently seen. Gray to brown overall with a big rounded head. Found at a broad range of elevations from sea level to high mountains, in woodland, forest, parkland, rocky areas, and sometimes towns and villages. Tends to roost well hidden in foliage during the day, when may be detected by tracking down the excited sound of small birds mobbing the owl. Comes out at night to hunt in clearings and more open areas. Most often detected by its quavering hoots and "kee-wik!" shrieks, given at night. Includes Maghreb Owl, formerly considered a separate species.’

The Yellow Wagtail at Cley this pm. Superficially striking in its grey & white plumage, was its back a little too brown & the face pattern a little soft for Eastern? All its flight calls sounded Western & the odd more buzzy note was often in alarm. My sonograms seem to bear this out. #UKBirding
The grey and white Yellow Wagtail at Cley this afternoon. A smart and striking bird but was the back a little too brown washed and the face a little too soft? Hard to judge the hind claw as it fed in wet grass. Eastern and Western seem to overlap in most / all plumage features so the call is all important. This sonogram, recorded on my iPhone15, over the background chatter and gravel crunching seems to show a simple (Western) pattern without the saw-like tail produced by the more buzzy call of Eastern. This was the most buzzy call I recorded. An alarm call made when the Wagtail was flushed and chased by a Meadow Pipit. Despite the more buzzy note apparent in the sound recording the sonogram looks much the same as the flight calls. Assuming this isn’t a limitation of the recording device then the pattern seems to better fit a Western Yellow Wagtail, perhaps a Grey-headed?

Autumn arrival alert: the Yellow-browed Warbler has landed! 😍 Once rare, these tiny travellers from Siberia are becoming a more familiar sight as they pass through each autumn. Weighing just 6 grams, their sharp, distinctive call is usually the first clue they're around. Have you seen one?

Yes, after WW" and during the "cold war" but military alliances are geopolitical and in many cases there has been disagreement, e.g. Suez, Falklands, Vietnam. Mid Atlantic is meaningless, an island that overstates its importance, pretending its not European would be more accurate.

In point of fact the UK has only been aligned militarily with the US since WW2, but then so has most of Europe. Politically the UK never has been aligned with the US, though some want that. Culturally there has been some alignment, but even there are significant differences.
