So Much for the City by the Thrills is banjo-driven, country tinged landfill indy but it's light hearted and some cracking singles. #pop #music #album

Debut by Bjork seemed super weird at the time but now it just seems to be a 90s dance record with her doing Bjork things. Very fun. #pop #music #album

Metal Box by Public Image Ltd. I hated their debut but this sits much more in Jah Wobble's dub bass and is better for it. #pop #music #album

Duelling peregrines the highlight of a varied watch at Fraisthorpe this morning #yorkshirebirding

Sheer Heart Attack by Queen might be my favourite album of theirs. All over the place and still working out what they are as a band but absolutely killing it. #pop #album #music

Murder Ballads by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds is fun and has a rich Americana type story telling vibe. #pop #music #album

You've Come A Long Way Baby by Fatboy Slim is big beat. The opening run of track is insane. A great dance album despite it's ubiquity #pop #music #album

In Our Heads by Hot Chip. If cerebral, poppy electro is your thing then Hot Chip are your jam. I really liked this. #pop #music #album

Wild is the Wind by Nina Simone is simply lovely stuff. She is a force of nature. #pop #music #album

Natty Dread by Bob Marley and the Wailers is a lean sounding album full of great tracks. #pop #album #music

LA Woman by The Doors is the bluesier end of their catalogue and fab for it. #pop #music #album

Loveless by My Bloody Valentine is a shoegaze delight. A really good album. #pop #album #music

Pre-admin error. Immaculate vibes.

An admin error had Izzy eliminated and reinstated in the 50m freestyle. She had to swim in an additional heat and had a full crash out. She recovered to drop a massive PB. 29.43, a drop of 0.4 seconds. Insane #swimming

Pretty steady watch this morning at Fraisthorpe. Tried to avoid blinding myself so no real seawatching. A trickle of meadow pipits #yorkshirebirding

Trying to automate creating bird reports. Trialing on Barmston. Database of 23k records to end of 2025 created (missing ebird / scarce birds post 2020 but integrating @trektellen.bsky.social data). New skills being unlocked... #yorkshirebirding

A decent pre-work watch at Fraisthorpe this morning was punctuated by nearly 1000 teal, 2 curlew sandpipers, 3 whimbrel and 2 unexpected nudists. #yorkshirebirding

My daughter qualified for the Spring Yorkshire Swimming Competition. She turns 17 in a couple of weeks and this is her first time making it after millions of close calls, COVID related cancellations and changed qualifying times. Lots of tears yesterday. It was for a swim she did mid GCSEs.

Da Capo by Love is a very cool half album of 60s psychedelic folky stuff followed by a predictable 19 minute jam which goes nowhere. #pop #album #music

The Scream by Siouxie and the Banshees is full of ideas and a bigger sound than most post punk but the production, which seems like an aesthetic choice makes it impenetrable to me. #pop #music #album

James Spencer @ornid.bsky.social · 07/09/2026

Rock N Soul By Solomon Burke is one of the forerunners of soul music and it's an antiquated arrangement of some pleasant songs and a strong vocal. #pop #music #album

James Spencer @ornid.bsky.social · 07/09/2026

What's the 411? By Mary J. Blige was good. Much more 90s hip hop influence than straight soul and done with a humour. #pop #album #music

James Spencer @ornid.bsky.social · 07/09/2026

John Barleycorn Must Die by Traffic is a baggy but enjoyable jazz, folk, rock amalgam. #pop #music #album

A nice couple of records this morning at Barmston. First up a Raven south and then 3 Cranes which were tracked from Primrose Valley. Later seen at Hornsea and Grimston. Patch tick 197 #yorkshirebirding

First game of 11th edition today. My Ultramarines versus his Ravenwing. Ended halfway through R4 when my mate had to leg it as he'd locked his wife out (oops!). He was up but but there was not much left. It had been brutal, with his new land speeder dead in turn 1. Obviously. #warhammercommunity

Vespertine by Bjork is immense. Her voice dances like an elf over the snow of the orchestration and she is on top form. I like this very much. #pop #music #album

Back up to date with ...Baby One More Time by Britney Spears. A very odd mix of massive singles and some absolute filler. Odd to make an album list but pleasant enough. #pop #album #music

More Songs about Buildings and Food by Talking Heads is their second album and the songs step up from 77, the bass drives it and Brian Eno's production sharpens it up. More bouncy fun. #pop #album #music

En-tact by The Shamen is a fusion of indie and rave. I have to be honest, until the last few songs where they do some experimentation, I was bored. #pop #music #album

The Poet by Bobby Womack is pretty steady, pleasant soul music. #pop #music #album

77 by Talking Heads is fun, angular and bouncy art pop and Psycho Killer is just nuts. Love it. #pop #music #album

Another Music in a Different Kitchen by The Buzzcocks is very good but just lacks the killer single which we know they can deliver. That said Pete Shelley and co deliver a solid album #pop #music #album

McCartney by Paul McCartney is his debut solo effort and it's almost like Pavement in that it's full of ideas, lo-fi and yet doesn't quite get it together. And then you get to Maybe I'm Amazed and it's a wow. #pop #album #music

Felt Mountain by Goldfrapp is their debut a bit different to later more glam disco efforts with a trip hop vibe. One of my daughter's friends dad was the drummer! #pop #music #album

Lyrical story telling by Dolly Parton on her Coat of Many Colours. #pop #music #album

Neneh Cherry's Raw Like Sushi is very of it's time with rapping like Bart Simpson but it's a powerful pop album and she has something to say. #pop #music #album

Nothing's Shocking by Jane's Addiction. An instacensor due to the front cover but a groovy rock album which moves away from 80s hair metal to something else. #pop #album #music

Screamadelica by Primal Scream. Possibly the best album cover ever and an eclectic mix of dub, acid house and indie. Movin' on Up is amazing. Loaded is great. #pop #album #music

Music from the Penguin Cafe by the Penguin Cafe Orchestra was new on me. Art pop, orchestral and jazz pieces. Inoffensive and fun. #pop #album #music

The Clash's eponymous debut sets the tone for their career and London is Burning is immense. A bit uneven and awful production but you can see a great band. #pop #album #music

Appetite for Destruction by Guns 'N' Roses is a riff fest with some great singles and Slash tearing things up. Love it! #pop #music #album

As a teenager, I wanted Kid A by Radiohead to be OK Computer 2. It isn't at all but the beautiful layered soundscape is a delight as it ebbs and flows. #pop #music #album

James Spencer @ornid.bsky.social · 20/08/2026

My lovely daughter smashed her GCSEs but has come home disappointed which is sad. She got 4 8's, 4 7's and 6 which in old money is A*'s, A's and a B. High standards!

Pacific Ocean Blue by Dennis Wilson brings us up to date, fusing the Beach Boys tradition sounds with early 80s rock. I wondered what it was doing on the list but after listening to the whole album, there are no poor songs, and the floor is splendidly high. A surprise gem. #pop #music #album
