I ran over 150,000 simulated games of Pac-Man to find successful runs that took exactly one minute. Theyre not perfect, so technically this day clock takes 23 hours, 59 minutes, and 59.375 seconds.

Preparations are well underway for the Bridges #Mathart conference starting in Galway, Ireland, tomorrow. The #MathArt exhibition is being set up, and we'll have a set of wonderful talks and activities. As every year, I'll keep you posted! www.bridgesmathart.org/b2026/
A couple of transparent cubes hanging from a pine tree in front of a university building.A collection of mostly origami-based mathematical art arranged on a table.A shot of a large hall with several tables and stands on the wall. Mathematical art is placed all around and people are looking at it.A large #MathArt work, composed of different crocheted pieces hanging in front, with some tables with MathArt in the back.

I think that lower down underneath that back and forth there is a cylinder spinning very fast bringing the yarn through a circle of hooks that could be knitting a spiral tube. I can’t figure out the back and forth, maybe it is tension or the diagonal thing somehow?
110
mathgrrl @mathgrrl.com · 21/05/2026
Given how fast a circular knitting machine spins, my new guess is that there is only one direction of knitting, in a spiral, and the diagonal strands are running through the knit work?

wow, great find! there are a bunch of YouTube videos of the RUIS machine you found, same machine makes a bunch of different nettings? it looks like it's a circular sock knitting machine at the business end www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIl_...

You’re right about crochet though, I wish I had a crochet machine!! I actually think we could make one but there is no financial reason to do so, and so nobody does. On the other hand I have no idea how!!

The slip stitch version would be strands making the slip stitches and then separate strands weaving back and forth like shoelaces. The knit version would be that the loops are formed in the other direction with perpendicular strands. Can’t tell from the photo

mathgrrl @mathgrrl.com · 21/05/2026
Actually it’s difficult to tell from the photo but the new one might actually be knitting. I kind of want to try to replicate it in yarn. @ayliean.bsky.social if you are coming to Bridges please bring me one :)

mathgrrl @mathgrrl.com · 21/05/2026
It looks like a completely different machine/technique — old one is some kind of twisted grid but the new one is clearly related to slip stitches/crochet. Maybe it’s easier to machine the new way?

I converted a text message into a knight's tour. To decode it, follow the knight's tour, starting in the top left corner. The knight will traverse a succession of 11x11 tours, and each of these 11x11 tours corresponds to a letter. The message is a quote from Ursula K. Le Guin.

sort of both - it is a two-sided artwork and each side is different squares. it's all attached together like a sandwich with supporting drapery fabric between, so that it can hang for weeks without sagging. it weighs almost 25 pounds!

This is cellular automata applied to a staggered grid, like in beaded peyote stitch. All of these images were created with the same algorithm, what I call “Vines on a Fence.” The only difference among them is how I started each patch. I give the recipe for Vines on a Fence on page 105 of my new book

Drapery fabric with yarn attached at regular intervals in a grid

mathgrrl @mathgrrl.com · 07/02/2026
The good news is that this changes the problem of alignment from a global problem to a local problem. The grid is set, and I only need to worry about one dot at a time. So future-Laura will be happy, at least

121 dots, attach yarn on both sides of each dot. This yarn will secure the corners of the squares to the backing, then weave along the joined edges to secure those too. This work is BORING and tedious. I have completed the yarn setup for one dot; 120 to go 😭
