A knight's tour solution to a sudoku puzzle.

A open knight's tour of a 99x99 chessboard. The 99x99 tour is a tour of a 9x9 array of 11x11 tours. There are 9 different 11x11 tours: each one appearing in each row, each column, and each of the 3x3 sudoku blocks. To traverse the tour, the knight starts in the bottom left corner and after taking 99*99-1 knight's moves, finishes near the top right corner.

I named this cellular automata algorithm “Great Wave” because the images it generates remind me of Katsushika Hokusai’s painting, “The Great Wave off Kanagawa.” You can find the recipe for this algorithm on page 122 of my book, “Beading with Algorithms.” #generativeart #mathart #greatwave

#Embroidery with algorithms: I thought I’d try a staggered cross stitch with an algorithm I call “Buds & Vines” to make this patch on my scrappy purple pants. I’m using the hexagonal weave in the fabric as the grid to help me place my cross stitches, with one X over each hexagon. #generative

As a math teacher, I want every kid to play the board game Monopoly and be the banker, so they can learn to count by 5s, 10s, 50s, & 100s, & learn how to make change. I want them to roll dice and develop an understanding of randomness and probability & learn the economic consequences of monopolies.

I started this project twelve years ago, and today I hold the result in my hand. It’s a book that combines bead weaving with math called, “Beading with Algorithms: Cellular Automata in Peyote Stitch.” This book is the first of its kind, a recipe book of algorithms for making pixel art.

I’m not sure I ever realized that a sunset can have all the colors of the rainbow in it. I colored this tiny painting with Faber-Castel watercolor colored pencils on Tomoe River paper. It’s about 3.7” by 5” (94mm by 127mm). #painting

The lemons from my tree are pretty stoked about the recent rain.

Circular dogs are much easier to draw than dog shaped dogs. This painting exists to prove that you don’t have to know how to draw in order to have fun with paint. #painting
