Zack Polanski had the chance to show real leadership. He blew it | Rafael Behr
A toxic debate over anti-Zionism leaves the Green leader looking like a passenger in the movement that carried him to the top, says Guardian columnist Rafael Behr

An ugly old car park that is barely used, being replaced with some nice houses a playground (which people in Blackheath have been asking for for years) and a dedicated space for the market. Of course the usually suspects (plus Jude Law) are outraged.

Honestly the amount of nonsense being generated over an ugly car park that is barely used is genuinely ridiculous

The 2016 remain campaign was awful - Cameron wanted to keep the Tory party intact and Corbyn was hostile - and we still got 48% in the face of a hostile press and craven BBC. With Farage the face of stay out, honestly we would walk it.

The rejoin campaign would obviously need to make the argument but it’s not a hard one. Brexit made us poorer and less free. What not to like about a 10% pay rise for everyone?

I’ve been a long-term Burnham sceptic but this was the most substantive and positive speech I’ve seen from a UK politician in years.

True, but the point would be to give people some say in how government spend the bit that is taxed. So they feel some agency.

My wife had a neat idea that you could build support by letting people choose how some of it is spent. So you could direct a portion or your inheritance tax to your university or a local hospital or army regiment. I think it could help.

Yes that’s fair but I still think we need to accept that there are decent chunk of inconsiderate, sometimes dangerous cyclists out there and pro-cycling people do sometimes stretch to make excuses for them.

Martin McKee @martinmcker.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
Personally I would like to see more cycling campaigners and commentators calling out bad behaviour. Things like not stopping at red lights do wind up other road user unnecessary and tackling it would help to promote roads as shared space.

I think it is possible to recognise both that most of the outrage of confected, and also that the behaviour of a minority of cyclist is really poor and makes the rest of us look bad.

So at a zoomed out level seems - public link heatwaves and climate, salience is up, but competing with other issues. Net-zero has polarised much more right left, but support among Labour's coalition relatively stable. But general action tackle climate change much less polarising.

Despite a drop in salience, there has been no fall in concern about climate change - instead it seems to be that other issues are also rising up the agenda. Where there has been a divergence is that concern about climate change is decoupling to a degree from support for net-zero

One useful way to think about this is that among younger voters of ALL parties, social liberalism is their defining difference from older voters. In aggregate the difference between 40-50 somethings and the retired is economic attitudes. Between younger voters and the middle-aged its social ones.

Early signs are not encouraging about whether Burnham is willing/able to improve on the most odious failure of the Starmer government: responding to racist violence by condemning the violence but being silent, or even placatory, about the motives behind it.

I don’t think they do but the system sort of forces people to go a bit mad. If we had a solid comprehensive in every area - get rid of grammers, selection tests, religious and private schools - the whole country would be happier and work better
