Evolution and adaptations of the seminal proteome in an insect with traumatic insemination
The protein composition of sperm and seminal fluid are key to male fitness. However, we currently lack an understanding of the factors that shape seminal proteome composition. The common bedbug (Cimex...

What does it take to evolve a new trait? We have a new paper out that uses the Drosophila sex comb—a male-specific grasping structure found in a subset of drosophilids—as a model to answer this question 1/11

What are the genetic mechanisms for the #evolution of novel traits? This study by @brhopkins92.bsky.social &co links #Drosophila sex comb teeth to expression changes within ancestral cells, leading to diverged metabolic/developmental rates, and a novel structure. 🧪 #AcademicSky plos.io/4gQOnZK
Graphical abstract on the gain of a novel trait in Drosophila. The teeth of the recently evolved, male-specific Drosophila sex comb evolved from a more ancient organ, the mechanosensory bristle. We show that changes in the expression of genes that are shared between mechanosensory bristle and sex comb teeth cells lead to changes in a variety of fundamental cellular processes that together enable the morphological transformation.

The photo, phylogeny, general design are those of the corresponding author(s). They made the bristle schematics in biorender and the fly silhouette is their modified drawing of D. melanogaster from SciDraw (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3925939).

In the second paper, we looked at the male bedbug sperm and seminal fluid proteins. As bedbug sperm make a convoluted journey through the female before reaching the egg, we thought this might lead to some unusual selection pressures on the ejaculate.

2nd we wondered what goes on in the repro tract if the action is going on elsewhere? We found the tract lays dormant until sperm arrive suggesting postmating response evolved in response to sperm receipt not mating. It also shows ↘️immune response indicating a functional shift w/o genital penetration

To deal with being stabbed in the gut by a dirty “needle” filled with sperm, female bedbugs have evolved a novel organ called the spermalege that’s separate from the reproductive tract. Sperm stay in this sponge-like organ for hours before crossing into the blood and then the reproductive tract.
