Did anyone actually get elected over it though? Like, I know antivaxxers have always been insane, but was it as much of a *political* force in the 30s as post-Covid?

It wasn't political back then. Plus, Roosevelt was president - it would have been harder to pretend that a Polio vaccine would have been worse than what he did suffer.

I'm currently listening to "It Can't Happen Here", & as prophetic as Sinclair Lewis was on many subjects, he couldn't have envisaged deliberately withholding effective life-saving treatment from children in order to shore up a twisted ideology.

This is not "controversial", it's deliberate child murder.

The Green Party need to kick out the antisemites and get back to what the party was supposed to be all about: Opposing solar farms and high speed rail.

A reminder that if the Green Party finds itself in court for violating equalities law with its anti-Zionism motion, it won't be the first time.

How fucking pathetic is that. Duck your responsibility to actually lead, then retrofit your opinion once it turns out the crazies fucked your party.

I would not have voted for Zionism motion, Zack Polanski says
A motion declaring Zionism a form of racism was passed by Green Party members on Sunday.

Instead of imposing uncomfortable discipline on their insane membership, the Greens retreat behind "democracy" & then bleat about their sadness & regret. Well guess what, collective responsibility will bite you on the ass whether you believe in it or not.

When four of my colleagues dejected to the Greens in 2025 they made a big song & dance about how they were silenced & told not to campaign on (unspecified) issues in the Labour party. What they were really mad about was strong leadership, a party line & collective responsibility.

Marina @marstrina.bsky.social · 19h
Anyone who paid attention to the gender wars in the Green Party knows that it's a poorly disguised puritan mob. It's convenient for a lot of people to talk about enteryism right now, but the tendency to converge on the most extreme opinion & then purge dissenters is in the Greens' DNA.

"On the [Zionism is Racism] motion, I voted and argued against it...but the clash of conference with an exciting and mobilising by-election campaign meant many of us were persuaded not to campaign publicly for these ends". Do you not see how absolutely damning that admission is?

Matt Zarb-Cousin:

Zack Polanski is one of the most talented political leaders this country has produced in decades and the only one capable of stopping Nigel Farage. The Greens will outpoll Labour by next year and be the second largest party in terms of membership. The sky is the limit.

"Peaceful status quo" is your spin on what you think people who disagree with you believe. Anyone who can't see that things are markedly different and markedly worse for both Israelis and Palestinians than they were on October 6th simply doesn't want to see it.

This doesn’t bear scrutiny. The status quo was not peaceful, but 10/7 was a sharp discontinuity from the level of violence. Even looking extremely broadly, we’re talking about the largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust. That discontinuity matters!

🔴 This morning, Russia has killed 12 people who were travelling by bus in Kramatorsk. Another 14 were injured. Vadim Filashkin, head of Donetsk military administration: "Russia comes to Ukrainian land bringing death. It strikes our cities, kills our people, and multiplies its crimes every day."
Charred bus still in flames, debris all around

It starts with euphoria - we, the righteous, have inflicted & will continue to inflict gleefully lurid blows on the hated enemy. But when the repercussions hit - when/if Speitan is arrested - the story will be one of pure, blameless victimhood. Of "suppression of free speech" & "Zionist propaganda."

I'm very struck by how closely this follows the pattern of "Ecstasy and Amnesia" identified by Shani Mor as the quintessential dynamic of the Palestinian story. A repeated pattern of triumphant attack followed by grievance.

Hard to explain what the last three years have been like. The friends who celebrated atrocities (and were then outraged not to be invited to your wedding). The isolation and lack of empathy. The sudden acceptance that, you know, maybe Jews don't need to go to city centres on weekends?

I started wearing my Magen David on that morning. I'd never felt the need to be visibly Jewish before, but after October 7th it felt like not doing so was craven. It wasn't the day I became Jewish, but it was the day on which I became A Jew.

Marina @marstrina.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
I couldn't have been more wrong, of course. October 7th became the only atrocity I can think of that acted as a mobilising force for solidarity with the perpetrators rather than the victims. In that sense it was a day that changed everything, not just for Jews, but for everyone.

My only other really clear memory of that day of shock is the NYC demo where activists celebrated this "glorious act of resistance." I wasn't surprised by it, but I do remember thinking, my god, they're so stupid, don't they realise they will alienate everyone from the Palestinian cause like this?

I don't know what happened to the mother & the two kids, but the dad was taken into Gaza & was confirmed dead many many months later.

The first video I remember watching was of a family being held in their kitchen for many hours. The mom was trying to keep the children silent. The dad kept putting himself between them & the guns. The daughter was crying & asking "why did they kill my sister? Why did they kill her, mom?"

By evening I knew something horrific had happened. Some of the videos were already circulating, but we didn't fully know about Nova or Be'ery yet. Casualty numbers weren't known & some terrorists were still inside the country, battling IDF forces who themselves didn't know the full picture.

Marina @marstrina.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
My dominant memory of October 7th is confusion: I woke up to tweets about some kind of incursion early on the morning of Simchat Tora. We didn't know which places were being attacked or how, we just knew it was big & aimed at civilians. I had a Labour selection meeting that morning, as a candidate.
