I've spent a lot of time inside classrooms of very poor schools, including working with well-resourced parents like @nhannahjones.bsky.social who opted for those schools out of social obligation. And despite all that I excelled academically. But my racial and overall self esteem was low. I loved school but would dread interactions with my peers. So I understand it's such a hard choice to make and it shouldn't be one. Why must we choose between racism and poor schooling?

I was the only black child in my classes or if I was lucky one of two till 6th grade. Numerous times students called me the n-word. Once a student told me in the "olden days" I would be her slave. She also gave me very detailed instructions on how to kill myself when I was 11 years old.

I was a top student and went to a selective college. But I also dealt with racism all my schooling. My mom made my elementary principal have the school's first Black history programming. I wasn't accepted into my school's honor society despite teachers calling my mom saying I should be.

This article is so personal to me. I went to a failing school for pre-K that was predominantly Black. Then K-12 I went to a pwi with some of the highest scores in the county. Now my parents didn't purposely move for my education but moving made a major consequences on my life.
