The destruction, which was ordered by the Supreme Court in 2017, is igniting emotional conversations that seek to balance the immense historical value of the records alongside the confidentiality survivors were promised in providing detailed and gruelling testimony about abuses they’d suffered.

The records agent, which runs a website called My Records, My Choice where survivors can request copies of their records and/or have them provided to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, has largely gone quiet: it hasn't posted on its social media channels in nearly six years.

Across Canada, there are calls to stop the destruction of these records, which, amid a rising tide of unfounded residential school denialism, document the scope of the abuse perpetrated on Indigenous children in residential schools, where thousands did not survive.

This is abhorrent. From journalist William Wilson: "I was pepper sprayed from close range without warning...After a heavy baton blow to my leg...I was then pushed to the ground. SPVM continued to beat me as I lay on the pavement. I felt several kicks against my body, including my head and neck."

And she did it all with such compassion and humility and skill. She had the same conversations – over and over – with my mum, who suffered from very extreme medical anxiety. But never got fed up. Where a lot of doctors found my mum difficult or even annoying, Dr. Algu just met my mum where she was.

Marsha McLeod @marshamcleod.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
Dr. Algu cared for our entire family, not just my mum. She always managed to come by our house when we needed her. When she walked in our front door, I could have cried with relief. She gently steered my mum towards some difficult conversations – ones she did not want to have – but were very needed.

"She gave up her specialization and now works in primary care." This makes me sad to read. Dr. Algu was my mum's palliative care doctor in 2024. She gained my mum's trust, which was almost impossible to do, given my mum's really extreme fears of the medical system. But she listened to my mum.

I'm trying to switch from Otter to a different transcribing platform with better privacy and turns out if your paid plan lapses, the company locks your recordings older than 30 days. Learn from my mistake—record off the platform, then upload; I often didn't do this and now my files are held hostage.
