Fishy Friday: Bathypterois sp., a tripod fish. Solitary and stationary, these deep-sea denizens perch above the seafloor using specialized fin rays and face into the current. When an unsuspecting copepod or other tiny crustacean drifts by, this animal is set to snack. #Doldrums, 2,040 meters

It's #FossilFriday! ⚒️🧪 For your consideration: Prasopora, the gumdrop bryozoan, a common element of late Ordovician faunas in shallow, storm-influenced tropical carbonate platform sediments of the Appalachian Basin, from Kentucky to upstate NY.
Two fossils of bryozoans, colonial lophophorates. These colonies (zooaria) resemble gumdrops in size and shape, although reportedly not in flavor. The specimen on the left is a top view, showing a mound covered in tiny holes (zooecia) that would have housed individual functional clones (zooids). The specimen on the right shows a colony from beneath, with visible growth bands from overlapping laminae.
Label:
"Prasopora simulatrix

Float like a glass squid. What might it feel like to reach a state where your body’s density perfectly matches your surroundings? Their buoyant bodies are filled with ammonium chloride, which is lighter than seawater, helping them to conserve energy while traveling. 1,729 m #ArgentinianDeepSeeps
