#FossilFriday Scanning electron micrograph of the cheilostome bryozoan Fenestrulina from the Miocene of North Canterbury, New Zealand. Visible at the centre is an ovicell in which larvae were once brooded, and to the right the coiled tube of a fouling spirorbid tubeworm.

3/4 Plastic type mattered: highly buoyant foamed plastics were particularly associated with Spirorbinae, potentially favouring long-distance dispersal. We also detected non-indigenous species and recorded 3 bryozoan species on plastic debris for the first time.

More historical scientific art for #invertefest: Bryozoa, a variety of marine & freshwater (or both) aquatic invertebrate animals in a plate from Kunstformen der Natur (1904) by Ernst Haeckel. In this case the species depicted are part of the Gymnolaemata class of marine bryozoans. Coin for scale.
An illustration of many Bryozoa species, dramatically white against a black background. The shapes are intricate and varied with geometrical patterns.
