This exemplifies @eliothiggins.bsky.social 's idea of 'disordered discourse'. They're going to keep flogging this dead horse to the point of prosecuting Smith on grounds that are demonstrably utter bollox. Right-wing politics is now untethered from reality. But it's reality that's gotta give.

The NYPD hired their first statisticians to use math to find crime in *1916*---predictive policing and AI in governance are often exacerbating deep-seated problems and to address them we can't just address AI, we also need to address the bigger issues.
A new yor times article from 1916. Headline: "Arithmetic used to detect crimes" and the subhead "police department employs it with success through bureau of statistics."

Love that a Unites States executive order mandating “Super Intelligence” in the place of “Artificial Intelligence” is forced to cite a definition in law that will still call it “artificial intelligence”. We live in Stupid Intelligence times.
Sec. 3. Definition. (a) For purposes of this order, and except where otherwise provided by law, the terms “Super Intelligence” and “SI” mean the technologies and systems encompassed by the term “artificial intelligence” as defined in section 9401(3) of title 15, United States Code. This definition shall govern the implementation of this order unless and until superseded by subsequent Presidential action consistent with applicable law or by an Act of Congress.

Reuters got some of the IPO docs. Anthropic is a total dog of a company. Spent $12.6bn to make $4.6bn in revenue in 2025, $7.33bn of which was compute costs. Operating loss of $8bn. Losses getting worse year over year. Amazing stuff www.reuters.com/business/fin...
Summary
Companies
• Anthropic IPO could value the company at more than $2
trillion
• Anthropic lost $42 billion in 2025
• Al lab spent $7.33 billion on compute and infrastructure last year
• Operating loss widened to $8.06 billion in 2025 from $2.98 billion in 2024
• Execs, industry analysts have expressed concerns over harms of Al tech
Sept 28 (Reuters) - Anthropic is making a massive bet that Al will transform the global economy more profoundly than industrialization, electricity and the internet, according to its IPO prospectus seen by Reuters.
But the cost to get there will be staggering. Anthropic reported a net loss of $42 billion in 2025, and plans to spend $518 billion on cloud, computing and infrastructure obligations in coming year, according to the
prospectus.

Well, well, well - if it isn’t the consequences of our own actions. It would appear that migrants are not, in fact, the fiscal drain we’ve been told they are by years if we go by the £4bn to £6.5bn shortfall that’s been caused by the precipitous drop in numbers under this government. Funny that.

Introducing Gurpo
A drawing of a small blobby figure inside of an enclosure with string coming off it, with text saying "introducing Gurpo, the new wearable personal assistant. Gurpo is not a computer program, he's a real tiny guy who is trapped inside your medallion necklace.
Gurpo hates you, but is incapable of doing anything about it, and he has to answer your questions or he gets electrocuted. It's non-lethal.
If you shake his enclosure hard enough, gurpo will throw up!"

I loved the XKCD take on it here
panel 1 with a narrator standing in front of three representatives - physics, biology, and chemistry
narrator: Welcome to the degree-off, where we determine which field is the best! Physics, wanna go first?
Physics: Sure! I'd like to tell the story of Richard Feynman's manhattan project lockpicking pranks...

Panel 2
Physics ...and as he said "all science is either physics or stamp collecting". Thank you

Narrator: Great! Bio, you wanna go next

Bio: Okay

Panel 3 - close up on Bio with a graph trending strongly downwards over time

Bio: This is a graph of the death rate from infection disease in this country.

Panel 4

Bio: The heroes of my field have SLAIN one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse.

Panel 5 - Bio points accusingly at physics

Bio: While the heroes of YOUR field gathered in the desert to create a new one.

Panel 6

Physics: ...Jeez, what the hell? I thought this was supposed to be fun and lighthearted

Bio: YOU MUST HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT STAMP COLLECTING.
