What would charging temporary residents for health care and education mean for Alberta?
When Albertans vote in the province’s referendum this fall, they will be asked whether people legally living and working in Alberta without permanent resident status should pay extra to use two of the province’s most important public services.

And then of course there's always the possibility that this is meant as the thin edge of a wedge. Some still remember fondly the days when Alberta charged everyone health care "premiums." (A PC gov't eventually ended the "premiums" because they were inefficient and a form of unfair taxation.)

Purely as an interesting chance to study human behaviour and economic incentives, I hope some newsrooms still have enough staff to track whether gasoline sales drop significantly through the next eight days and whether lineups suddenly appear at gas stations on Oct. 1 and 2.

Saw a video clip of D. Smith scrunching her apparently teary eyes while saying she loves Canada and people should vote against separation in the referendum she promoted. But her reason? AB is finally getting energy policies it wants. Which implies separation would otherwise be understandable.

Every day I think surely they've reached peak craziness in the U.S. and things will start calming down, and every day they find a new way they go more wildly into surreal orbit. The comments on this one are great. So is the double entendre in the memo about checking "male service members."

Studies? The entire referendum campaign is moronic. It's a manipulative attempt to make Alberta voters focus on issues that are of relevance only to a government seeking more power and more access to huge pots of money. And the real action is in the other nine questions, where the real agenda lies.

Obvious evasive rationalizing, given how much the UCP vote dropped. Also obviously a sign of worry that in some other constituencies vote splitting really might affect election results. The main problem: the UCP has always been a coalition of two parties artificially bolted together.
