Several days ago, I lost my sunglasses while swimming in the sea. Last night, I discovered that what Neptune taketh, Neptune returneth. Although he keeps one lens, presumably as some kind of tithe or tribute.

Today in 1839, polymath John Herschel took the first glass plate photograph.

A glass-plate photographic negative showing the mount of a 40-foot telescope. The image shows a latticed structure which appears to be white, against a brown/grey background. Interference or damage has caused discolouration in the lower part of the circular image.

Today's swim was a bit later than usual, so most of the birdlife had already completed its roost-to-feed commute by the time I got to the water. I did disturb four little egrets, who flew off in a most disgruntled fashion. Twenty metres offshore, a lone herring gull was, however, extremely gruntled.

A really rather beautiful ghost sign just popped up on Magdalen Street, thus confirming its position as the best street in the city again for yet another year. Early c20th painted and gold foiled glass. Seems it was covered over in the 1960s. It’s been a Chinese chemist for years.

The ladies & gents hairdressers sign on the Golden Dog Lane exposure, which is pretty much intact.

The frontage, the glass is cracked in the middle, but still readable and in decent condition. It reads 32 - Hairdressers - George Clapham - Perfumers, in gold leaf on green.

Today's early sea swim was tranquil. There was no wind, the water flat calm, the gulls went unhurriedly about their business. Idly floating about a hundred metres out to sea, I could clearly hear the song of a robin on the neighbouring farmland, challenging the new day to do its worst.

Went for a pre-dawn sea swim. A flock of gulls examined me from their heights, but didn't circle above me like yesterday. Out at sea, a curlew called, with a response from a wood pigeon on land. Away to the east, an orange flame atop an industrial chimney glared at me like Sauron's eye.

Dawn swim: I was thoroughly investigated by a flock of about 100 gulls. Flying, like the other birds at that time of day, towards their breakfast, a few peeled off to circle me. Gradually, the rest altered course and had a look before deciding I was inedible. Managed to lose my glasses in all this.

Does anyone know anything about this stone, in Cilgwyn, Pembrokeshire? It's on private land which I don't think can be seen from anywhere nearby. It doesn't appear on the OS map I have. It's close to Carn Ingli (where the sun is on the 2nd photo) and has markings (6th photo). #StandingStoneSunday
