Is there a place in Ottawa where a person could take a cab (rideshare whatev) to get whatever heirloom apple varieties are local? I don't want to buy in bulk, it's just that when I travel in the north in October, having one each of new-to-me apples would be great. @canconsffh.bsky.social peeps help?

she said "you can do anything in fiction as long as the situation afterwards is more interesting that the situation before." since then i have been keeping an eye on character death in fiction. many writers seem to think that character death "raises the stakes" but actually just makes things boring

I do wonder about the overlap between the kind of readers who decry “plot armor” and sadists. There are writers who I fell out of love with because I got tired of sucker punches disguised as realism. I can *absolutely* be trained not to emotionally invest in your characters.

Finished @marissalingen.bsky.social’s A Dubious Clamor on the plane home last week. I was hooked from the beginning, from the initial antagonist being so very Wodehousian he could’ve been a member of the Drones Club *chef’s kiss*

🧵 Attention, Fellow SFF Artists and Authors -- here is my response to Must Read Magazines, after they presented an Asimov's art contract expecting me to waive all Moral Rights and Copyright to my art. And, I would strongly advise the following to my fellow pros…. 1/
John Picacio’s response to Must Read Magazine’s request for his waiver of all Moral Rights and Copyright of his commissioned art for an ASIMOV’S assignment. Short version — Picacio says a resounding NOPE.

So, an update on moving: I may get the chance to stay in Seattle in the next 3 months or so. I've talked to people and they think they can get me settled to move by the time I go back to FL in December. So, if you'd like to give me an early birthday gift and help me stay out there, here you go:

Today is the last farmer's market of the year, and I'm not going because we're leaving town on Friday. This is the right choice, but it doesn't stop me from having big autumnal feelings about it.

I grew up in a family that loved me and LIKED me, and treated me with care and respect and taught me to treat them that way. Growing up in that family meant not growing up with some biological relatives. That was A GOOD CHOICE, and I am GRATEFUL for it.

I am also a person who was estranged from a grandparent, and I consider it one of the many great gifts my father gave me, that I didn't have to grow up with his father as an influence in my life. I see people saying "and if you cut your parents off you'd deprive your kids of--" WELL OF WHAT?
