Mrs Ramsay in Woolf’s To the Lighthouse: “All the being and the doing, expansive, glittering, vocal, evaporated; and one shrunk, with a sense of solemnity, to being oneself”🔥 🔥 🔥
Mrs Ramsay thought bubble in To The lighthouse Woolf

All the being and the doing, expan-sive, glittering, vocal, evaporated; and one shrunk, with a sense of solemnity, to being oneself, a wedge-shaped core of darkness, something invisible to others. Murphy's end ("Murphy")
famous final fate of the eponymous hero

Some hours later Cooper took the packet of
ash from his pocket, where carlier in the evening
he had put it for greater security, and threw
it angrily
at a man who had given him great
offence. It bounced, burst, off the wall on to
the floor, where at once it became the object
of much dribbling, passing, trapping, shooting,
punching, heading and even some recognition
from the gentleman's code. By closing time
the body: mind and soul of Murphy
were freely
V
distributed over the floor of the saloon; and
before another dayspring greyened the earth
had been swept away with the sand, the beer,
the butts, the glass, the matches, the spits,
the vomit.

can’t recall if we do #fridayreads on here but I loved reading Michael Hofmann’s translation of Markus Werner’s THE FROG IN THE THROAT and I’m looking forward to finishing John Keene’s COUNTERNARRATIVES so I can immediately read it again
Two novels side by side-Markus Werner’s THE FROG IN THE THROAT, which depicts a somewhat idyllic study of trees against blue sky and a sun (by Felix Vallotton) and John Keene’s COUNTERNARRATIVES, which depicts shows a strange, almost primitivist style figure in yellow and white against a black background (by Ike Morgan)

Looking for summer reading recommendations? May I suggest Adam Ehrlich Sachs’ THE ORGANS OF SENSE, John Berger’s BENTO’S SKETCHBOOK, and Seichō Matsumoto’s POINT ZERO, translated by @louisehk.bsky.social? You can read this month’s newsletter here: www.marisagrizenko.com/campaigns/vi...
Three books next to illustrations of their covers. The Organs of Sense features an older man wearing a dark robe and head covering; his eyes, cut out in the shape of stars, hover in front of him; the background is a vivid Kelly green. Bento’s Sketchbook depicts an open book (drawn roughly and coloured in black) with a blue square featuring an eye at its centre. Point Zero’s cover displays a photograph of the outside of a room with lit lanterns; our view is obscured by a wood-slatted curtain.

In this month’s newsletter, I wrote about Marie-Helene Bertino’s BEAUTYLAND, Markus Werner’s THE FROG IN THE THROAT, trans. Michael Hofmann, and Thuận’s ELEVATOR IN SÀI GÒN, trans. Nguyễn An Lý. I also wrote about a dog named Panda. You can read it here: www.marisagrizenko.com/campaigns/vi...
Three books, three illustrated reproductions, all arranged in a grid. The cover of Beautyland by Marie-Helene Bertino depicts a beam of light, in purple and blue, emanating from a small, bright dot (presumably a planet). The Frog in the Throat's cover shows a night's sky, with pink clouds approaching a yellow moon; dark trees occupy the foreground. The cover for Elevator in Sài Gòn shows five images in irregular shapes (roses and a woman with hands over her eyes) on a white background.
